the fat fad???

i was down at warrnambool from monday this week till wednesday. and i caught a fair few bream but nothing would touch the high bouancy fatbody lures like, cubbys, atomic cranks, cranka cranka and camions i tried slow rolling, twitching pause but they just didnt provide. i will admit my confidence doesnt do well with these lures. any other tips for these to aid in my success with these.

cheers mitch

G'day mate, I fish sort of down south basically from narooma in nsw down to bemm in Vic.
Gotta say that fat lures have not been a success for me either, gave up on them seasons ago and I always use minnow and shad patterns. My fave is the strikepro Pygmy, nice slow wobble and smashes them.
I catch 5 to 1 at least black bream over yellows too.
I reckon further north the yellows go more for fat lures over the black bream down south, that's my 2 cents anyway, cheers

Black bream love these fat lures boys
One of the deadliest lures around, Berkley 3b Fatdog, Jackall Chubby and Atomic Crank 38 my personally favourites. Mitch, when I fished Warny I didnt get much success with them either, the flash minnows and slimmer lures were working well. In Gippsland the "fat" hardbodies go off the chain. For a bit more info theres some pics here.

But yes, saying Black Bream dont like these lures is silly, they cream em same as well as Yellas
Cheers Mitch

Hey Mitch

Not sure how much experiance you have had on Blacks but hear are a few things that work for me on Blacks. I find suspending cranks outfish floating cranks in most situations. Slow rolling retrieves work well at times on Blacks but I have far more consistent success using a low rod tip style of retrieve where my rod tip is doing a 'short rod tip draw - short lure pause - short rod tip draw - short lure pause - wind back to tip starting point without moving your lure - full length, long smooth rod tip draw - longer lure pause' then repeat pattern.

Mate there are days where the blacks love a faster jerkier style of retrieve and days where they will hit nothing but a slow roll but I find these days to be the exception rather than the rule and 8 out of ten times i find that the retrieve I have just outlined above works a treat... Hope it makes sense to you!

The other thing that I find Blacks can be fussy about at times is lure noise and in my opinion a lot of fat CRANK style lures can have too load rattles which can spook big blacks away from your lures at times.

From the situation you explain, I am very surprised that the 35mm CRANKA Crank did not do the job for you as it is designed as a susspending CRANK and to have a subtle enticing knock, not a tingy rattle like some others on the market. I designed it that way purely because I wanted a CRANK that worked well on both Blacks and Yellows i can assure you that this has been achieved in the CRANKA!

Mate i hope some of this helps you catch a few more Blacks on CRANKS in the future as on thier day they are simply deadly on both species!... Gain some confidence in CRANKS on Blacks and you will catch plenty!

Cheers
Steersy

Try Atomic Hardz Bream Shad and Hardz shads insted of cranks and also give suspending chubbys a go.

It's hard to fish floating lures with twitch and pause for blackies anless it's a very slow floater. Suspending are more suitable for blacks.

Sometimes they do hit on a slow roll, but pausing the lure in front of them seems irresistable

Cheers,

Yes, Fishin.com.au are selling them.

And being a 4.7g lure it should cast well into the wind

I like both the floating and suspending versions. Some days i actually prefer the floating. Can slow the float down a bit with some tungsten weight if needed. All the fat lures mentioned slay blackies but i guess it may depend on where your fishing them. Here in Gippy they love em.

You should not have any trouble casting any of these lures, most are 4g+ and cast a mile.
