Leader length

Fshtale... welcome to the site

The rule of thumb that I use for leader length is that the leader should be no longer than your rod. By doing this the knot that joins your leader to your main line is off the spool when you are casting, thus avoiding any tangles or complications.

Cheers

Yep Fishtale, as above, no longer than rod length for reasons mentioned. I started off using 50cm-1m leaders but found the longer the better. Better on spooky fish as f/line is very visible if that is what you use as mainline. Plus alsl allows you to slowly cutdown on leader lenght as you change lures over and over again.

Iv got waaaaaaaaaaay over a rod length of leader and had no trouble with knots up untill yesterday night. the knot was catching on the line on the spool and pulling big loops off after allot of frustration i got the knots out but now im going to switch to a shorter leader

chears, Nathan

I also go less than a rod length for the leader. Extra long leaders seem OK however if you are using a really light leader 4lbs and less. The knot is small enough not to cause too many tangles.

I like using an improved albright for leader connections because it is extra compact.

Uni Knot...

The double uni-knot is one of the quickest and easiest knot to tie your main line to your leader.

I usually only use about one rod length of leader for the reasons stated. Last week I had to go up to 3-4 metres of 16lb Nitlon as I kept getting done over, I didn't get any tangles.

The improved albright knot is the way to go.
