Morethan PE SV's Casting Distance

Hooooly.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPUFS4RSnwY

So, if you can't understand Japanese, here's a rundown of the video.

They are testing the casting distance of the Morethan PE SV by comparing it with equal spinning tackle. Distances are measured with a laser. Multiple trials are done to reduce error.

The rod on the PE SV is Morethan AGS 97MLB
The rod on the Spinning reel is Morethan AGS 96ML
Both using the same 1.5PE and the same lure. I think it's a Morethan Realsteel

In the end, the PE SV wrecked the spinning tackle. At the end of the video, they explained that the line comes off the spinning reel in coils, which is loss in energy. Whereas the PE SV casts in the straight fashion with no loss of energy.

Nothing surprising about the result. An overhead outfit will always outcast a fixed spool reel once the casting weight gets above a certain weight. That's why all those long distance surf casting guys use overheads.

Sorry I forgot to pick up that. The guy said that the lure is 26g on both setups.

I found managing overrun a lot less stressful than getting wind knots...overrun a correct brake setting and thumb solves all but I line tangling on the stripper guide... it just seems to happen.

It would be fun to test cast the Morethan against the Exsence DC.
I've seen Dean Thomson cast a stickbait spanning entire sections of river on one.

You mean the DC or PE SV?

DC. I didn't think the Morethan is out yet.

My favourite Daiwa BCs have ceased production

Oh wow. I've got one of those sea bass bait rods, lures are gonna fly when I get the dc. Morethan is out, just not on rakuten

In the vid he doesn't preload the spinning rod as much as the bc rod. So not a fair comparison.

I thought the results would be far greater for the baitcaster. But it's only under 10m.

I know they are trying to promote the new reel but these tests are not really practical.

They were testing under calm condition, whereas in real seabass fishing condition, which the Morethan series is designed for, you are mostly fishing on windy shore. Wind could alter these casting tests results dramatically.

Wind also limits your lure choice when using baitcast setup. You better stick to heavy and aerodynamic lures, like the metal blade as used in the test, or vibration plug (lipless crankbait). But there are times that seabass prefers minnows or topwater plug.

I am not anti-baitcast. I love using baitcast, of course, as most of my friends know. I have a similar setup like the one in the video, a Branzino 96MLB rod matched with IP68. I haven't used really heavy stuffs, but casting an Evergreen 16g vibration plug, I could always reach 50m plug easily. 26g metal for 92m? I guess no problem. It is great fun to use baitcast but practically spinning gets my vote.

Will find out more about it in about 3 weeks. Will be interesting casting against the metanium and the metanium DC later on. Was bay casting today with the Metanium HG, in head winds with 14lb FC without problems. The latest generation of casting brakes almost takes the skill away from baitcasting.
