which knot to use?
G'day guys
I'm kind of new to using leaders but i've stated and i've been using the albright knot, but it kepps slipping and comming undone (i'm using vanish onto my 6lb fireline). Is this the right knot to be using with fireline to mono?, or is there a better knot to use? Thanks Dan |

Dan,
The Uni knot is a good choice as Alex said, but there is nothing wrong with an albright either. I prefer them when using heavier leaders as they produce a smaller profile knot than a uni. If the albright is slipping, try using more turns. I've been using the improved albright which involves making wraps both up and back the knot rather than just back as with the normal albright. If you make 5-7 turns up and the same back down the knot, it shouldn't slip. Use plently of lubrication (spit) when tightening and do it with firm even pressure. Check out http://www.fishnet.com.au/library/kn...ight_knot.html for tying instructions on the albright. The uni knot is here http://www.fishnet.com.au/library/kn...doubleuni.html cheers James

Dan,
I use to tie albrights, but found that, unless tied 100%, they would slip. It cost me fish I switched to double unis, which i find much easier to tie, especially in low light/moving boat/hungover/still drunk or whatever hehe, and i would trust a slightly bodgy double uni over a suss albright any day. Not saying you should go with a knot you know is suspect but you get my drift Looking at sportsfishing sites, the number of braid to mono leader knots is kind of nuts, all of us using double unis seem to be in the dark ages haha Cheers Duncan |

I use the improved albright that jimi mentioned due to the same reason, the smaller profile knot.
i find it easier to tie and stronger, more reliable than the uni to uni. cheers |

Thanks guys, i found diagram of that revised albright, the extra loops up the main line is called a rizzudo finish or something, but i tried it and i actually got a couple of fish in without it slipping, but they were just a couple of lizards. I guess the real test will be those harder fighting bream i haven't managed to catch yet with SPs, i reckon i'm due though, i've been trying religously most most days for the past year or so
. but anywho, i'll get there. Thanks again for the advice Cheers Dan |

Hi
I have a uni-knot on one rod and an improved allbright with a rizzutto finish on the other. Have not been able to separate them for reliability yet. Neither slip, but the allbright is just a tad neater. Cheers Dave C |

I've found that with Siglon 8lb both a modified albright and the uni knot give good knot strenght but with the vanish in 8lb it breaks to easily. I found a website with a bunch of knot diagrams, theres a "shock leader" knot that just seems to work exceptionally well with the vanish. Given that its significantly cheaper and the 8lb vanish is between 6lb siglon and 8lb siglon in diameter its fairly good value for money.
Website details below. http://home.cfl.rr.com/floridafishing/knot20.htm |

I'd vouch for the dbl uni knot.
I was using cheap crud nylon and have now respooled with penn powerline 6lb main line 8 lb leader. The first time I tied the new line it was 5am in total darkness by torch light. I was suprised by the tiny diameter (0.20mm in 8lb) The knot slipped more than usual and I thought I was going to have to retie but it held and later that morning when I snagged it was the Improved blood knot holding my jig head that failed not the dbl uni ..
