what size reel and rod for barra

Hi looking to get a setup for barra looking at Okuma could I please get some suggestions of what rod size and what reel ( speaking like 2500/4000 ect...)

was considering a 4000 reel - Shimano sierra but idk if that would be to big if not, what rod would go good with that.

Thanks.

Where abouts will you be fishing for barra? This will play a part in deciding what size reel to buy

I would say shimano 4000/ daiwa 3000 as a minimum.30lb braid and lots of it. I have fished near there and theres a good chance barra won't be the only thing to grab your lure, so the extra line capacity will be a bonus.

i agree with the boys if it is your first barra encounter..you want to be catching them...30lb minimum, 60lb leader and my first barra reel was a 3500 daiwa tierra. I think 3000 minimum..for rod there are hundereds out there but the biggest tip is to buy one that has runners large enough to fit bigger leaders through i suggested the jewel barra spin to a mate and he rates it very highly

these days i like to go lighter for the sport and enjoyment of a big fish on smaller gear so for me:

10-17lb gary howard g-force extreme (most amazing rod ever!!)
daiwa certate 2500r
varivas avani sea bass max power 20lb

very versatile combo could basically flick anything at anything and have a chance...well within reason

anyway sorry about the rant you can tell i like talking barra (well all gear really) good luck mate and enjoy your trip

Jewel looks pretty good is that the 5-10kg one? , would a Shimano Sienna (4000) size go good with it? or maybe a Abu reel idk yet

Okuma are a very underrated brand IMO. They make very reliable rods and reels, and are really good value for money.

Could you suggest an Okuma spin setup for barra? I'm guessing 4000 reel size with 4-8kg is about what I'd need

Someone is selling a 4000 terra on for sale forum. $90 perfect barra reel and good price. I'm shore you could find a cheap 6/10 kg rod. Make shore it's light you don't won't to go all that way and have a setup thats hard to use. Good luck wish i could make it up there.

I'll check it out,

What are the Abu setups like?

Something like this http://www.abugarcia.com/products/re...s/orra/orra-sx in the 40 size? Assuming size 40 is a 4000 size reel

with http://www.abugarcia.com/products/rods/vendetta in like a 6-10kg?

Any 3000-4000 reel, 20lb would be fine in creeks, barra are clean fighters, nothing up there besides jacks or fingermark will really have a chance of busting you up, and yeah 60lb leader will deal with everything really, you could go 30lb braid but I feel I get a better lure presentation and more sensitivity with 20. Biggest barra I have ever caught was 122cm and in fast current on 20lb braid, 60lb leader. Choose a rod with a lighter tip but plenty of backbone, 4-8 is a good all round size
