Fluorocarbon vs Polymer ???

Do you think the smaller spools of flourocarbon are value considering how well something like Penn Powerline stands up against snags, abrasion etc.

Thoughts ???

Warren.

Warren,

I bought a spool of fluoro for roughly $15/50m and have been using it over the last couple of weeks. Prior to that I had been using Penn 10X.

To be honest I cant tell the diff.

I'm not too sure either way.....

But, I'm a bit more confident when I fish with the flouro stuff - and that probably makes a difference.

Guess I'll just have to do some in-depth comparisons on some local sand flats, what a bummer

flouro or not to flouro?

Well I would have to say that my testing is inconclusive at the moment but the Penn Powerline is certainly good stuff. I may be crazy but i'll be trialing 4lb leader over the next couple of trips, only time will tell what works!

I use 10lb Toray fluoro and it beats the Platinum mono I was using hands down. Nearly as limp and VERY abrasion resistant.

When a bream runs into the snags with mono, the mono comes out a bit hairy in places and requires a change... especially after a long fight with a kilo plus bream (or even smaller specimens).
With the Toray, my leader comes out smooth without a single nick EVERY TIME which I find astonishing and is the reason I will use the stuff whereas before I was unsure.

To me, the fact that it's totally invisble underwater comes second to its overall performance such as general handling and abrasion-resistance.

Hey Chris - where do you get the 'Toray', and if you say 'my mate from Japan' I'm gonna scream, unless he can get me some too

Cheers,

as dave said its all about confidence. i bought some scientific anglers fluoro the other day because thats all they had, i usually use stren fluoro, and the stuff is shite. ive never lost so many fish or jigheads to line breakage. i went back to stren magnathin and my problems disappeared.

now all i gotta do is wait till the stren fluoro to come in and i'll be a happy little fisho again

cheers pete

It's very difficult for me to offer much in the way of brand names etc. That is only because of the company I work for and the agencies we represent. I don't want to look like I am pushing product, by which has never been the case). But I fell I need to tell you. I have been using Suffix Invisiline which is 100% Flourocarbon. It has the toughest outer coating I have ever seen. Prior to the next few weeks I hope, it was only available as low as 20lb. We have ordered 6,8,10 and15lb and I am praying it arrives very quickly. I have landed many Bonito on fly with the 20lb stuff even when they have scoffed the fly. Beleive it or not I can have the same leader for up to a few weeks. Yes that is after a re-tie of knots(not that silly). Have landed Mulloway to 55lb on the same stuff as well. The only draw back is the price. The better the quality of flouorcarbon the more it will cost. 20lb leader of 25 meters retails for around $25.00 but I have no problem with that as it is no different to buying $200 reels. In most cases high quality flourocarbon has a high specific gravity(denser than water and it will sink).

Hope some of this helps

Ps. If anyone would like to know more on the following brands please only email me on madaff@iinet.net.au

Penn
Jarvis Walker
Alvey
Halco
Bomber lures
Mustad hooks
