Matching up a Nitro Vapor 7'

Going to buy a reel tomorrow for my 7' Nitro Vapor was thinking of a 10' Certate 1003? I know the Vapor is tip heavy but was after some advice on which reel matches up well with this rod? I've played with the new Certates and for the price IMO they are almost impossible to go past.

well theyre definitely a great reel there is no doubting that, and if your not worried about the balancing too much then get it. But at 195 grams your rod is going to be stupidly tip heavy. In all seriousness a reel around 250 grams is more suited to a vapor, something like a daiwa egee or a larger sized sol. The only problem then is it kind of defeats the purpose of having such a light rod when you chuck a heavy reel on it, and most likely a reel in the lower price range.

I guess just match it up with a few different reels, and see if you can handle it being tip heavy. If you can, id say go the certate

What other reels (daiwa preferred) get closer to 250 grams? How about a bigger certate?

Even if you know the reel weight, there is no better way of matching it to the rod than bringing the rod with you to the store and try.

With all the advice you get here, it's you who will decide what reel feels and balances the rod best. (Oh, did I mention SOL)

Cheers,

Alex

I have this exact rod matched with a 2010 Certate 2000! Matches perfectly.

I have the 2004 RCS spool for when I am feeling like a breaming challenge on 4lb

With split rear grips becoming more popular and the reel mounted higher from the butt, if the rod has no balancing system built in and your after a neutral balanced rod unfortunately that means putting a heavier reel to get the desired balance.
If your after Daiwa and 250gr, the Emeraldas Colossal 2508 meets those requirements

Hey mate,

It might match perfectly, but it definitely wont balance properly. Some blokes dont mind their combos not balancing, but when your forking out that much money for a rod you should hope you can balance it to enjoy it the most.

As Alex said its ultimately up to you in the end. Go into a store and mix and match.

A 2500 certate would be your best option if your keen on a certate that will balance the best. At 245 grams and a 2500 size it should work out for you. I wouldnt put a 3000 size reel on that rod even if it balanced better, thats just too large.

Can i ask how you are judging the "balance" ? I am not trying to be smart but I am asking legitimately. I have always done the 1 finger thing and this combo balances just like my fireblood combo does.... So im a little curious

They have a 7' vapor in the shop I was just going to put on a few reels and see what felt best, I was keen on seeing what you guys had to say though.

What do you guys think about a blue-vias, certate, calida? Certate seems such good value?

I just checked out my combo as you had me curious about balance. The reel is 230gm without line. I have the RCS Power Knob on mine which is 10gm (not taking into account what the other standard knob is. So if we say 240gm plus line on the rod and it seems to balance just fine... Do you have this combo and can you check?

I put my 2500 Steez on there and it doesnt balance quite as well but it still seems ok. The Steez is only 200gm without line though....

I dont mind the new caldias mate and they feel good! As do the new luvias's! All great reels performance wise, but if I had to choose it would be the certate hands down.

I guess just make a list of possible reels you would be happy with, match them up, see what feels best, and buy that

Balancing is up to the individual but as a general rule for myself it should be balanced where you hold it. Like in Penthrox pic he has the balance point slightly forward of the grip if that is where he holds the rod then its balanced. So you really need to take the rod in because it all depends on where you hold the rod.
The best wat to balance the rod is not necessarily with a heavier reel. The benefit of the Vapors is thier lightness and to put a 250 gm reel on it is counter intuiative. gets some weight at the butt end of the rod les weight required to balance. JM2C

been through this because the rod was the bane of my life. as i see it the fulcrum should be where your forward finger is on the foregrip, or your second finger if you keep a finger on the blank. It's supposed to be an extension of your arm, so being tip heavy and uncomfortable seems counter productive.

i double wrapped paracord around mine between the rear grip and the butt, with a 2004 caldia and a full spool of line it is slightly tip heavy but not by much.

It's a means to an end, i'll replace it eventually if i can find a rod i like.

if you give it a bit of tungsten tape it will serve as a counter weight.

Pity you cant buy an adjustable weight system to retrofit these rods, Some of the Nories trout rods have them, and they have 10.5 gram discs to add as you need. perfect system.
