Nothin for breamin, but the spinfisher 11 foot overhead rod is prob the best value for money surf rod out there. The Slammers and liveliner are bulletproof if a little on the heavy side. Just my 2C

once upon a time the penn spinfisher reels were the the bench mark for rugged dependable spin reels, when made in the usa. i think country of manufacture has changed,as they are now cheaper than they were 10 yrs ago.

i still use a penn powerstick when lending a rod to a guest in my boat when targetting kingfish.it is a good value rod that has pulled plenty of solid kings and can take some punishment from guys that may not have the best rod-work technique.

hope that helps
cheers

owned a penn 330gti reel and it was a tad heavy and the anti-reverese was a liitle bad and after a few years the level wind broke. also had at most 5kg of drag spo pretty weak .not bad for the price though

Rix , i have a Penn Applause 3000 that i have used for years chasing bream, bass n whatever else wanted to hook itself. I havent had any problems with it yet. I also have a Applause 8000 that i use for beach fishing, which was purchased about 6months after the 3000 being that i was impressed with it. I havent used any Penn rods (except my beach rod) that could help you here in a bream forum come almost anything else lol.
I think my reels have lasted soooo long is that i really get in n look after them after fishing plus service them every month or 2,ie, checking bearings, grease etc. Cheers Gav.

I was a fan of the affinity, a little on the heavy side but it had a nice smooth drag and was a good performer for it's price, but unfortunately mine didn't last too long, must have popped a bearing or something, now a turn of the handle sounds like you're playing the maracas I hope it isn't a common issue with them, as they are good little reels for the entry breamer.

yeah, i used a few penns when i first started breamming. i had the applause-never had any probs.
the applause and affinity are very similar, and at around 100 bucks they are a good option. very smooth drag (rare in a reel that cheap)
sure they arnt as smooth as a daiwa or shimano, but for the price. good starters option.

My first spinning reel for lures was an affinity, great little reel with a smooth drag an awesome line lay. As mentioned above a bit on the heavy side when casting all day. I still have it to this day and still as smooth as the day I got it which is about 7 years ago now. Great value for money.

Dont know about breaming gear but i have a few penn rods and reels that have been great for the price.

I have a slammer live liner, pursuit, powerspin v, a whiting and snapper rod and another cheap combo i bought ages ago. Only problem is with the live liner that sometimes switches into baitrunner mode for no reason- its my fault though, that reel has seen a lot of saltwater and sand and not much love. The pursuit gets a lot of use casting slugs and was great for free!!

So in general i think they are great value for money, although their reels do seem fairly heavy- but solid

Another that hasn't been mentioned is the Penn Accord reels. They're a little cheaper than the Affinity but are still a nice smooth reel with a good drag. Bought one about 3 years ago as a cheapie to loan and it's still going strong.

I use a penn applause 8000 for beach fishing and its a great reel. It has landed a few DohDohDohDoh and small sharks but shows no sign of abuse. Very good drag on them. I have heard of guys landing shallow water dhuies on a applause 1000/2000.
