Frogs immatations.

Hey guys,

Directing this topic out to all the barra fishers. Just wondering what is the best technique for frogs immatations? I got told for the "scum frogs" use them over the lily's then flick them up (I assume to imitate a frog jumping/fleeing) and then give it a pause and wait for the action.
Any help on this would be great, also what is my best hope for flicking tiny lures for barra (60-90cm) + the weeds.
cheers,

I know of quite a few guys who use Stanley Ribbits (frogs) and Manns Hardnose frogs on worm hooks and the Nitro jungle hooks for a little extra weight.

Haven't done it myself but a very good article in the ABT angler guide a year or two back....

Similar to the scum frog, Jackall also have a Mask Frog (and a Giant Frog) which is a weedless option for thick weed and lily pads etc.

Mick.

2009, P124.

They plug the squidgy or berkley ones but i know you can get these in Oz also. More of a sliding action from Mask Frogs than the fierce chopping action that the twin tail frogs give off.

Zoom Horny Toads are the other ones.... i think Foxies Barra shop at Gin Gin stocks a lot of Barra stuff and does phone or net orders.

Jason Wilhelm had a little bit of footage in the latest Squidgy Secrets dvd on the froggin technique, and i think it can at least show you where fish are if you just raise one, as the bow waves they put off when they blow up on a surface lure can cause heart failure!

Apart from slick rigs, tango dancers and B52's etc that is the end of my barra fishing knowledge, there are other sites dedicated to the fresh stuff that would be of more help perhaps.....

Mick.

i saw someone once using a frog imitation called a super frog. he would do two quick twitches downwards
and then pause for a few seconds and was getting smashed by the barra on the pause.
hope this helps

the frog imitation will only work in certain circumstances, and obviously certain retrieves are used for different circumstances. wait for the warmer months oct onwards and target weeded shallow areas. i have fished with jas in the introductory stages and to date on a regular basis and still get a buzz out of it, we even have our own private dam with approx 50,000 90cm barra in it locally = awesome, but exspensive (u.s bass fishermen decided to apply their techniques on barra and they seem to be effective, no different to our bass barra and bream techniques today). the frogs have been effective for years in the lake c (you know where), try the inlet near the footy feilds that would be your best bet at the moment, but resort to using them approx 1 foot under the surface with heaps of pauses and twitches. in the wild, i have caught plenty this year in the gladstone region on frogs, biggest 121cm (and on my trust c14 2500). definitely the presentation that you talk about the hopping and waiting for the lilly to explode is very effective, especially on the hot nights and early morning edge bites. nice seeing a lilly get engulfed.

small lures are deffinitey the go in the harbour at the moment, especially around the headlands. im not affilitaed with any lure company (although i should have shares in at least a couple from the amount of gear i have attained in the past, and lost), but my preference is the reaction innov trixie shark and zoom horny toads. TT sw weedless hooks.

hope this helps. any drama's or have any problems you know where i am most days

p.s 129 cm barra was caught in front of the hatchery on sat night.

cheers

Cheers mate,
thanks for that went down to "lake c" yesterday arvo and nothing. Didn't have and scum frogs just chuckin lil x-raps and reidy lures. Not even a hit the full 3 hours I've been there. Walked from behind the airport up to where it changes over to salt. I've been told about small lures there and the main reason I asked the question. Also, funny thing is I just looked at a review on the ci4 and was surprised that the 2500 can hold up to 8kg!
Very surprising indeed, and cause of the wait it wouldn't be a hassle. Was pound rod are your casting with it?

Thanks for all the advice, very detailed and 129cm is huge for that lake.
cheers,

the rod im using is a 2.13 t curve snapper 5-8kg.

that dam has had a shyt load of water go throuh it but barra have been caught there in the past couple of weeks. the frogs are the best attack for that dam being weedless but still a little cool for surface at the moment. give it 3 weeks. happy to put the shytty tinnie in there for a fish if you like.

i will organise some footage (4 hours of it) that jas and myself took out at awoonga and monduran with frogs. the 129 was in font of the hatchery (salty)..

cheers
kurt

Cheers mate,

Would love to see some footage. Always, gets me keen when someone catches a 129cm barra!
Also, what do you recommend while the 3 weeks are over? weedless softplastics?
cheers,
