Whats considered a "light" combo?

Hey guys,

Been looking at alot of gear lately as I am looking to upgrade my current combo.
One combo I have found is 300g all up which seems reasonable/maybe on the heavier side, but I guess if it balances well it should even up.

I have heard of some rods around 50g in weight, matched to a reel thats like 150g your looking at a 200-sub 200g rod. Realistically though, are many combos lighter than 200g all up?

Won't find much lighter than 200grams. I honestly feel that it is going to be the balance that give you the percieved weight. A little experiment was done last night with Breamcraft3000 and me. He has a 2000 airity on a new luvias rod. airity is 200 grams and the luvi rod is about 2/3 or bugger all. I had my mulloway outfit out for fun which currently is a 3000 Branzino (230grams) and an 8-17lb Carrot Stix Gold. A physically heavier combo. holding both in the hand however the molloway setup felt a bit lighter than the bream setup purely because it is nigh on perfectly balanced. the luvi was a bit tip heavy and that makes you wrist counter that which in turn makes it feel heavier.


The reason why you hear so many people say go into the shop and feel the combo is because when it is right you will know it. It will feel like the whole thing weighs less than 100grams if it is balanced.

I have a TD Sol 6-10lb + Pflueger Supreme 8030MG/9030XT and the balance point is about 10-15mm in front of the reels leg. As such it feels like it weighs nothing.

As above, that's why it pays to take your reel in and try it on a few different rods.

Pretty much clarrified what I was thinking in terms of the balance is more important.
Im getting a rod from overseas and hopefully Ill be able to find a nice reel to balance it out, but as mentioned, probably worth taking it into a shop and trying it out with a few different reels.

If I had a grand or so to spend just on a reel, then yes I would mate, but thats gonna have to wait a few more years

If you have the rod then it is worth going down to your local and balancing the outfit with a reel...You should be able to hold the rod with the reel just above the top of the reel seat, balance it on your index finger and if it's balanced it'll lay horizontally

Under 300 grams maybe but what combo would be under 200g?? Just from my knowledge the lightest reel i know of is the Daiwa Presso at i think 160 grams and most ultra light rods are about 70-80 grams? Theres probably some reel/rod i don't know of but just sounds impossible to get one under 200g

Although im not the best with names, there was another thread which stated some ultra ultra light rods which were closer to 50grams, so obviously that matched with the presso would be really close to 200g. Im not sure if there actually are combos that light though, thats why I asked realistically are there many under 200g.

I dont think the rod will be too tip heavy, but I will have to match it with a few reels first obviously to see what works the best. Ive found a 116g rod thats 7 foot 3 and Im planning to match it with a pflueger supreme xts which is 200g. I dont think that will be tip heavy.

Good idea about adding some ball bearings/weight to the end of the rod. I would definitely do that with a few cheaper rods, but Im looking at getting a "good" combo that I dont want to modify
