2010 Stella pics/review (dial up warning)

Just received my new Stella in the post today and thought I'd share some pics and a little bit of a run down

The colour appears to be slightly darker than the press photos, overall better looking than I expected.

The bail arm has a slightly different design than the older model inside and out I think because it clicks over more easily than the 07' and feels more positive.

The Handle has a different knob made of a slightly harder material than the previous model. The handle can now be swapped side to side without changing the threaded insert, which on the 07 was a pain in the arse if you wanted to change hands on the go.

The line roller coating has been changed from titanium nitride to what appears to be Shimanos ARB coating. (as to whether it makes any difference...)

There is a different hole pattern in the spool which I quite like.

The drag knob has been changed from plastic to aluminum and it has a slightly finer adjustment and a much more positive feel.

In comparison to the 07 model it feels like less effort is required to turn the handle with a slight reduction in smoothness (this may improve with use as my previous Stella did) EDIT:After a little bit of fiddling and adding some more oil, Ive got to say the smoothness is on par with the 07.

Overall everything feels a little tighter and more positive and a bit more well built.

Final thoughts; Little improvements overall make this reel a better package than the previous model certainly, but is this worth the extra $250-300?
As far as I'm concerned considering how good the 07 model is, the short answer is no. The long answer is Id better take it fishing before I pass judgment!

Man you certainly got one quick.
Great review, thanks for sharing. It will be interesting to see what you think after using it a few times. I think you are right though in that it is hard to see it being worth the extra dollars.

Cheers, Dror

Thanks for posting all that. Very tempting as a next reel, only thing i'm not to keen on is the porting on the spool, i prefer the older one. Other than that the colours and overall auror of it look awesome. Drool

From feel the newer one is lighter.

The body is not the same as the 07' 1000 it is roughly the same as the 07' 2000, The diameter of the spool is smaller at the base but it is the same at the spool lip.

The spools aren't interchangeable. (the 2010's rotor is smaller but the diameter at the spool lip is the same and so is the line capacity.)

I can see why people would think that, but then again I think Branzinos look like something that should be doing happy laps on the bonnet of a candy pink wrx...

Went fishing Saturday and Sunday to christen the new reel.

No huge fish caught so I cant really tell you what its like under pressure.

I can say that it is a pleasure to use with no annoying little faults whatsoever, seamless operation which is great.

I know it sounds stupid but it really lets you concentrate on the fishing rather than letting any idiosyncrasies the reel might have distract you. For the easily distracted or annoyed such as myself I would recommend this reel.

Nice reel, I hate the look of the bail arm though, despite it's price they continue to make it look abit cheap. jmo.

Stella

Meh,

Thanks for the preview, but i agree about the cosmetics. The new version looks like a old version if you know what I mean.

Agreed. If Shimano made a version of Daiwa's hollow bail wire I'de be very keen.
