Just use Woolley Buggers!

Olive is a good colour. A bit of lead wrap in the body is good too

It all depends on what the natural food souces are in your chosen destination...
small fish - clousers
shrimp and crabs - crazy charlies and shrimp imitations
worms - whiting pop-up fly

bream flies

g'day josh.
One of my passions is bream on a fly
some observations made over a few hundred capures over the last five years or so here in S.A.
colour, bright day bright colour, dark day dark colour, unless your on
a crab bed Then brown or black will work in any pattern eg; baited breath
little clousers, or my own tyed pattern the deeper dan. hook sizes from sz 10 to 4 depending on area fished, time of year with food being sourced by the fish.
use flouro carbon leaders these help the fly stay near the bottom & dont be in a hurry to retrieve the fly. the deeper the water the heavier the fly needs to be the same if there is any current running.
a twichy retrieve of only 3-4cms at a time rod tip just under the waters surface so there is almost direct contact with the fly. hope this info helps.
regards Projoe

BMS is a good bream fly. Easy to tie, cheap to make and catches plenty. If you need extra depth tie the hammerhead version.small clousers tied out of neer hair, crazy charlies with a marabou/turkey wing, gurglers and small poppers and sliders when the cicardas are on.

Great thread, Great info

Whats the fly in the last pic ProJoe?

Its pretty amazing really when you consider the diet change in different rivers/estuaries available to Bream.

An example maybe the Swan where mussels are a big part of the fish's diet where as the Moore has little to no mussels, little to no prawns and mostly baitfish.

When you consider other more southern estuaries things change again.

Then there's the distance inland where the diet changes again.

While some articles sprout the Eureka one and only fly for Bream everywhere its probably not the case.

Any more info would be appreciated.

Yep I'd say fly choice would be quite subjective to the location- though I'm hesitant to state whether there would be any kind of advantage between one colour & another until I get some runs on the board.

Been tying a few charlies & clousers lately & also will try to hunt down a couple of epoxy shrimp & try to chuck around. Only problem will be geting out to try them- shore based with a flyrod is a bit hard on the swan in winter.

My fav materials at the mo'- Calf tail, Neer hair, Tan & Blue Crystal flash, bucktail & DNA holofusion. One experiment I've been working on is a size 6 clouser with a short craft fur zonker strip- should work.

Successful patterns people- post them!!!

Over in Melbourne, I've had good results with a chenile charlie. A cactus chenile body and a calf tail wing, weighted with bead chains. Have been having some problems with the fly getting snagged a bit too much for my liking so will probably use smaller eyes and a sinking fly line to get it down the next time.

Cheers,
Matthew
