Fishing-Political or not Political
The Fishing Party
A.B.N: 76 086 236 465 HEAD OFFICE (Federal, NSW State) 11Watts Close SINGLETON HEIGHTS NSW 2330 Ph/fax 0265 560338 0432252789 Email: sinali@optusnet.com.au www.thefishingparty.info Tuesday, January 16, 2007 NEWS RELEASE Support the Fishing Party Fishing, Boating, Recreation and everyday Australians need more than lobby groups. They have failed amid the political deals so It’s Time to Get Political so a call to the fishing community The Fishing Party is again testing the waters of Western Australia to establish a state political branch. Fishing chat sites are alive with debate on the merits of getting representatives for “Fishing” into the parliamentary system of WA. 34% of the state population is reported to partake in this wonderful sport and recreation, equating to six hundred and eighty three thousand four hundred anglers fishing for food and enjoyment. Recreational fishing generates over three billion dollars to the national economy with three hundred million returned to the states in GST. The fishing community expects a fair return in funding and management but the both are lacking. The party believes that a united angling and fishing group could provide enough political pressure to gain a better result from governments wanting re-election or legislation passed. Because of this lack of funding and management there has been a call for “another fishing license” which The Fishing Party totally opposes, when governments already reap the tax benefits. With the large number involved in fishing the possibilities are endless as to what could be achieved. Robert Smith, the federal party and NSW chairman is advocating a possible change of support exists because of disenchantment with the overall fishery and marine management. It’s not just about catching fish or overexploiting the resource as some depict as there are many issues that are not being addressed for a sustainable resource. Governments prefer to lock up areas and ban fishing rather than manage them. Rottnest Island the latest casualty The Fishing Party states that lock up areas are an option, if indeed the evidenced based science supports such a last resort action. Access to beaches and headlands, offshore reefs and islands are being prohibited for no proven reason. The environmental problems are also not being addressed in water quality and quantity, sewage, toxic runoffs, siltation, along with excessive nutrients influencing diseases and viruses. Erosion and the destruction of fish nurseries are also part of the list. Governments have locked up the land and now are being pressured to lock up the oceans. The Fishing Party as a start to creating policies for WA:- • Will support and campaign total access rights for low impact sustainable fishing. • Will encourage and protect customary and traditional use of the marine resource. • Will address and campaign on a centre line approach to fisheries management/legislation and (Marine Protected Area’s if proven to be needed). • Will demand proper stakeholder consultation and participation in the process. • Will consider no-take fishing zones only if no other action is appropriate. • Will continue to oppose the extremist’s anti-fishing agenda. • Will liaise with the major parties with sensible fishery management propositions. • Will support evidenced based science conservation and dismiss emotional rhetoric. • Will endeavor to get proper and fair funding for sustainable fisheries management. • Will put our ideas in submissions when they are called. • Will discuss and put relevant matters to Government Ministers. • Will keep the public informed on important findings and research. • Will support appropriate Government funded buyouts to the commercial fishing industry on a state-wide basis. • Will support Total Allowable Catches from a science perspective. • Will support seasonal closures on a science biomass evaluation. • Will support the business community for compensation in times of Government controlled business denial through lock-up actions. • Will push for environmental reform on water quality and quantity For more information: tune into the WA Fishing chat sites, contact The Fishing Party at www.thefishingparty.info , Join up, call or email Bob Smith at the above contacts. A Foundation meeting will take place when enough members commit to the party. 500 are needed to gain political party registration with the WAEC Authorised by Bob Smith, 11 Watts Close Singleton NSW 2330.

So does that mean that the WA branch of the FP will 'NOT' support a fishing license? Does that also include the current fresh water license that is imposed on WA anglers?

TFP would direct a WA Branch NOT to support a general RFL.
This is just one policy stance in the party aim to apply political pressure to get a fairer funding system where we believe all who benefit from fishing contribute their ratio based funding to it's management. That means all anglers, businesses and related entities who are included in the declared economical statement the Commonweath Govt puts out for fishing contributions. I.E from the GST created which is returned to the states and territories. Some will say that is pie in the sky stuff but we say it is the fairest way to say you pay. WA has already 5 rec licenses. TFP has no intention to disband any existing license system until they establish the proper funding arrangements, so the freshwater license would remain until then. If TFP doesn't get any backing to do this then I guess the masses believe in the current fisheries management system and there will be no need for the party.

I think the bigger issue, to me at least, is am I willing to throw my vote to a party that has no Party Statement to anything other than fishing. As much as I have issues with the major parties on how they manage our systems, I probably have bigger concerns about issues such as uranium mining, schools, hospitals and more. That's why I support RFW.
JMO. I would love to see what others think about politicising fishing.

I wasn't aware that RFW had policies on uranium mining, schools, hospitals and more.
Our main concern is that there is not major policy follow throughs on fishing. As an example of prospective agendas we have promoted this in the campaign in NSW> Extract: "In the last election TFP promised that if elected the first priority would be to commit to a stakeholder group/committee/board to formulate actions to be taken in the Upper House/Lower house so as to give directions to the member to proceed with. That promise is still the first priority from TFP." There is plenty of scope to debate concerns about anything you want but we called this attempt The Fishing Party for a reason. If not then those of us who wanted to change the world could have simply joined up in the major party system and played by their rules accomplishing not much. There is no guarantees with this project either but the possibilities could be fruitful to the future of your fishing. Experts might be able to tell us better.

I would have to agree with Bear on this...
As much as setting up sustainable fishing practices and cracking down on abuse of our wonderful environment is super-important to me...I think my vote is better left for a party that has a broader and more complete view of things. Topics such as economic stability, health, aged care, education, sustainable energy etc are likely to have a bigger impact on most peoples day-to-day lives than fishing. Don't hear me say that it's not important! Because it's very important!!! That's why most of us catch and release, and risk getting our heads smacked in by approaching illegal fishers on our waterways (I can't recall who posted about this recently, but good job). Personally I think it would be great if the 'mainstream' parties would devote a few more resources toward the fisheries issues. I believe these parties are in a far better position to exhert some effective political pressure where it's necessary. Perhaps it will take more effort from politically minded fishos taking up the issue with local/state/federal MPs as the opportunities present themselves. Maybe a more concerted effort and a unified approach from these individuals would be beneficial, but do we need a political party for this? I think not... I would be interested to see a break-down of where that $3 billion from recreational fishing comes from every year. I'm happy paying for my fishing licenses (cray and FW usually) every year because I know that catching just a couple of crays and maybe a trout or two (normally released though) during their respective seasons will more than cover the cost of the licenses. From a business front, I'm fairly sure that there are plenty of professional fisherman who have significant political influence. Having worked in the Marine industry for several years, I dealt with a lot of commercial fisherman (cray, tuna, scallop etc) and given the amount of revenue that they provide the Australian economy, I know that the governement keeps an eye on things. Finally a very minor point, but a political party that posts a 'formal' address such as this one trying to get support, and can't even get the grammar right...not so sure about that. Maybe Bob should take more care in what he authorises, or should employ someone that takes a bit more care in their copy writing. I'm sure there may be typos in my post, but then it's Friday afternoon...I have the cricket on...am getting close to 'beer-o'clock'...and I'm not trying to convince people to support my political party. Like Bear, JMO!

RFW don't have to Bob, they aren't a political party, that's the point. If a group like TFP is going to try and get my vote then they need to have a bit more substance than just fishing.
I think groups like RFW would have a LOT more impact if we showed some force through them. Nothing party based.

Nice...a cynical politician...way to match the stereotype! I might be naive, but wouldn't you hope that the people that are democratically elected into these positions are genuinely interested in changing 'the world' (or at least their community) for the better??? Yes, there may need to be some compromises, and history has proven that abuse of power is all too common, but surely a person that does not represent the views of their constituents (sp?) will not be re-elected. Voters are the ones who have the say...If you're not happy with your leaders then don't vote for them or use the resources made available to you to lobby them to change their stance (on whatever issue). The main parties hold the numbers and support because they get the majority of stuff right. From there it's just a matter of 'fine-tuning' to try and please more people. Of course you will never please everyone. You would also hope that environmental causes might rate highly for these 'extra' issues.

To put it VERY basically, democracy is based on the premise that the individual will put the good of the state ahead of their own good. This causes inherent conflicts for the individual and is basically flawed as most people will vote "what's in it for me".
When you throw party politics into the mix, then you have groups that troll for money and start pushing policies etc into "grey" areas where right and wrong is no longer black and white to support those who have supported them. Again, causing inherent conflicts'of-interest to the definition of democracy. While it's not perfect, it's still the best system for us, based on our culture and history. The problem in Australia is the apathy of the voters when, generally, they have remained uneducated, unaware and uninterested in how government works, how the issues impact on us and how to influence policies and governing. Hence it leaves the door wide open for opportunistic organisations with a strong membership base to suddenly mobilise and influence voting, policies, governing on single-issues. (Have a look at what has happened in the US since Reagan.) This leaves few opportunities to vote oustide the main party system. The current election results and voting trends leave little doubt as to election outcomes at a state and federal level in Australia However, a vote for a niche party can have a future impact - even if they don't get in - through pure examination of primary votes post-elections....as all political parties do. Therefore, if you analyse your vote and decide that it will have no immediate impact on the current election (either changing or maintaining the status quo) then you could choose to vote for an organisation such as this as an indicator to future governments of where people's values lie. So, you could decide to vote for the Fishing Party, and while they may not get a seat, they may get more numbers than, say, the Democrats, or One Nation, or the Greens, then the big parties note this and start taking a closer look at fishing policies etc. I don't think parties HAVE to have policies on EVERTHING to have an influence. They do to Govern, but not necessarily to influence government and governing. Anyway, this is too long. Sorry about the diatribe. Hope I haven't lectured too much. Just some thoughts. Me go fishing now

Why
Why I won't be heading up any WA Fishing Party this time around!
The exact reason I gave to Bob only recently! None a you apathetic bastages deserves the opportunity to have a party to vote for, or to be represented in the parliament! Anytime it's even "mentioned" you all cut it to ribbons before it even gets off the ground! Will it support a RFL or wont it etc etc... (Who gives a flying frederick). You know heres a little thought for you all! Ours is a representational democracy - where you can direct your preferences! If Schools or uranium mining, or anything else were your most pressing concern, you could vote accordingly - BUT, if you seriously were concerned about Yarragadee pumping, the fish die off's in all our rivers, and so on - you know what? You'd get behind this party and get it off theground - so that you COULD at least direct your preferences to that party after all the other petty daily greivances were dealt with on your primary vote! To be quite frank anglers do NOT deserve represenatation Bob - I've told you this over and over again, but you won't believe me! Why would anyone in their right mind want to serve to represent people who think & behave like this? They will biatch and moan till kingdom come - about everything thats wrong with society, the environment, the fish, or the department that overseas it's management etc etc... Get a fishing party up and going so they can give their 50th preference vote to it because they are concerned....and no ones listening? Give me strength - anglers don't rate in the political arena - never will - they are too busy dividing and destroying each other, to gather together to create something good! Quite simply as I've stated over & again - they don't deserve representation! Don't get me started again about General Fishing Licenses....Bobs right - theres no need for a RFL - because if the Lobster Fishers paid a resource rent / royalty - we'd raise MORE $ for rec fishing research etc than any license ever wil! Some anglers have their head so far up... Well you know where I'm going with this, best I stop now! Foget them Bob - they ain't worth the bandwidth! Cheers! |

'they are too busy dividing and destroying each other, to gather together to create something good!'
And if guys like yourself, Bob and Max had even half a brain you'd be trying to win over anglers instead of picking a fight. You lot have completely missed the point, you can't blindly ask people to follow you. Stop debating and start discussing, SEE and LISTEN to what anglers want and represent their wishes. After all, isn't that what you're trying to do? Represent anglers, not alienate them. How hard would it be to start with a RFL and work from there, if that is what the members want. OH wait, that's the sort of thing our pollies are supposed to do now and they can't get it right either. And you wonder why many anglers are cynical about a 'Fishing Party'. STOP carrying on like the rest of the pollies and REPRESENT US. Do the one thing most toher parties can't do.

Examples:
Q: Will TFP support fishing licenses. A: If that is what the majority of the membership want, then that is what will be part of our charter, but we would like members to consider the possibility that we fight for a share of our GST dollars. Outcome: While a minimalist license fee may be on the board, it would give the party a groups of members that would work with the party to help push other issues. I know it's an out there idea, but think of the alternative.
