Treble types

On sunday at super punts, i used gamakatsu trebles on the back of my laser pro's. They are similar in style to mustad treble grips or something- with the point slightly pointed to the shandk of the hook. All the fish apart from a flatty were dropped on them.

Has anyone ever tried them and changed due to poor hookup and landing rates?

Im thinking of changing to the normal shaped ones. Maybe it was the difference between points and no points at the end of the day? Maybe it was something else...

Hey Brad,

I haven't used Gamakatsus, but the other day, Ted and I were popper fishing for archers and my little poppers had size 8 VMC trebles on them, which had their points slightly curved inwards too. Despite having hooked heaps, neither of us managed to land one. It's not as if they initially missed either, quite a few were fought briefly before hooks were thrown/spat/pulled.

Maybe it's this particular design? Either that, or archers are damned hard to hook properly...

Yeah i dont doubt the sharpness but i have never really had good hookups on them- compared to the original hooks or the straight ones.

I will change them to size eight chemically sharpened straight ones (again gamakatsu's) and see if they make a difference. Theyre the ones i have on my DD 52 scorps and havent dropped a fish. Very strong too.

The black ones im doubting and the red ones are the jobbies im thinking of changing to...

Yes, I've had the same trouble, both with hooking fish and dropping them during the fight. Especially with soft bites that haven't engulfed the trebles. The simple thing is that the enlarged outer bend gets in the way!!! The fish bites on the bend of the hook and doesn't get the point. Such hooks are better for large mouthed species that can engulf the hooks and close around the shank and get the point. Plucking biters and nippers will never get stuck properly.

I prefer straight points for light lure hooks for this very reason. As evryone knows, Owner ST-36's are the ones for me!!

I have been using the mustard triple grips that come standard on RMG Halco lures. I have never dropped a fish on these, although I am talking trout only. Trout have soft mouths and therefore I fish lighter drags.

Yes but bream have harder mouths and bony grinding plates to get through so a stronger and straighter hook may be better. I should fish a lighter drag though- im used to having to almost lock up to pull fish out of snags and the fish i was after were flats fish- maybe with softer mouths than normal.

I have caught some fish on these hooks before but have always had plenty of dropped fish with these ones and on the standard scorp 52 hooks.

If i wasnt doing comps i wouldnt bother changing, but i need to boat all the fish i can.
