Eco sx40 split ring

Just wondering what the done thing is with the split ring on the tow point.Is it standard to remove it ,if not what purpose does it serve.also wondering what lb leader other peole are using on these lures currentlly i am using 10lb nitlon.Im a bit scared to go lighter as i am a tight ass. But if going down means more strikes im there.
