One of my friends were fishing in this nice Estuary South of Wollongong. Then here comes a boat which came from Lake Illawarra and Netted all the way up even to the Spawning areas near the Wear (sp?) and brakish water.
Is their something I cna do about this?

mullet creek

Artsy this happens on a regular basis, Mullet creek is one of the heaviest fished areas of the lake, by both pros and recs.

i was under the impression the this netting was legal.

maybe fisheries can tell us more.

Cheers
Chris

Thumbs down Got some info

I finally got through to the local Fisheries on the phone.

At the moment the the rules are like this (not offical wording and i may have missed something)

Netting is allowed in all creeks except Maquarie Rivulet.

The nets are to be no smaller the 80mm

During the winter months nets can be set all night
Summer months only "splash" netting is allowed can not set and leave

Other months can set for 3hrs max.

The Guy i spoke to was very helpful and also commented that he had had a few calls on the smae issue in recent weeks.

Cheers
Chris

Ill let my friends know about this as well as Im sure if they saw them again they without knowing this they would have started to pretend they are Olimpic Javelin and shotput throwers..

Thats very interesting, especially the part about no netting allowed in Macquarie Rivulet, because when I was waiting for my boat to get built I would go shore bashing over there, both day and sometimes night, and have seen on numerous occasions Pro's in there dropping and pulling nets. I didn't know it was illegal so I didn't worry about getting LFB numbers, but I will from now on.
Cheers guys
Brenden

Finally got a reply and here is the email that she sent me

Hi Nathan

Thank you for your email enquiring about authorised commercial fishing
in Mullet Creek.

Commercial netting is permitted all the way up to the causeway in
Mullet Creek but no further. The cause way is the tidal limits of the
Creek.

Commercial fishers are subject to numerous restrictions in Lake
Illwarra. Mullet Creek forms part of the Lake Illawarra estuary. You
can find the Lake Illawarra fishing closure using the following link:

http://www.fisheries.nsw.gov.au/gen/..._Illawarra.htm

The closure details what methods are not allowed for certain waters and
times of the year.

You may also like to have a look at the following link to information
about the environmental assessment recently completed for the estuary
general fishery.

Claudia
