Faulty real or normal wear?..

G'day every one .
I just have a quirey . I have a Shimano Sedona 2500FB and i noticed today that while winding heavier lures 15g laser and 25 g laser especilly with a fish on its "hard" to wind like the lines wrapped around the rod and makes an ugly noise ..
I maintain my reals moderatley well. The "over sized power poller" that the line runs over on the bail arm seams excessivley worn and looks to be the proablem (im no expert thogh) .
This real has been great so far i have owned it from new for 4 months . I use 6lb fireline and 9lb mono on it.
Should this be warranty or is it normal wear and tear..???

I've had that happen with a couple of "lower end" Shimanos such as Sahara's, I've also had problems with it sticking when I started to crank the handle.
Best thing is to put it in for a service to see what's wrong and get it fixed.

Agree with Swoff.....also fireline makes some wierd noises (scared the shite outa me when I first heard it) going through guides and onto the reel as well under strain too....I found this a bit noisier on my cheaper end gear also.

That happened to my Daiwa after I dropped it into the river and found out that the ball bearings were rusy and just jammed. Sprayed WD40 to get rid of the rust and after that it worked fine but WD40 is only a temp measure. The rust will return and I will have to repeat that every 2-3 months or so to get smooth movement... Don't know about yours though. Sounds like it might be coming form the inside (gears, pinions, ball bearings) rather than the roller thingy

I'd wager that the 'head' or rotor bearing in your reel is probably almost rooted. This bearing sits inside the upper body of the reel and shields the pinion gear. When you tighten the rotor up onto the pinion gear this bearing takes the strain. If your bearing is on the way out you will notice that the handle becomes very stiff to wind but if you hold the rotor and turn it, nothing appears to be wrong.

I see this problem with many, many reels almost every week in my job. It is not so much a fault in the reel as a lack of attention in proper maintenance. I'm not having a go at you but this bearing is crucial to a smooth reel. In the sedona it would be quite an easy task to take off the spool, remove the washer and click washer from the shaft. Undo the rotor nut and slowly remove the rotor. Undo the two or three screws that hold the one way bearing onto the reel body. Note- Do not undo the screw that holds the bearing together!

You will then be able to (in order) remove the inner bearing and washers from the pinion gear and remove the gear with bearing attached. Take the bearing off of the pinion gear and go to a bearing joint or larger tackle shop to get a replacement. If you want to use your reel for the weekend, you can squirt inox into the bearing and try to get it free (I find that a large screwdriver in the centre of the bearing helps). It will be noisy but will work.

Reassemble the reel in the reverse order to how you pulled it apart. Ensure that the one way bearing goes on properly (the groove on the underside needs to sit over the a/rev switch).

BTW- The line roller bearing can be maintained by taking the screw out and then CAREFULLY pulling the arm lever away from the bail. A drop of oil into the bearing and a few turns should have it operating at maximum efficiency.

The noise has gone so i will see how it goes on the weekend .. There are a few salmon getting around now so ill give er a work out .. Thanks agen

If nothing else mate, make sure you look after that rotor bearing!

Great to hear. hopefully a bit of oil will get it running smooth for you.

A note here though...DO NOT oil your anti reverse bearing (the big plastic monstrosity under the rotor). I spray them quickly with inox or tackleguard but don't oil them or they cannot grip and will not work properly.
