AVENGER 20 or DAIWA SAMURAI SA1500
Hi
Need some urgent advise please if anyone can help. I am getting a new reel tomorrow and want some opinion as to which is better. Okuma Avenger 20 or Daiwa Samurai SA1500 (7 b/b). Heard of lots of people with the Avenger but have not heard anything abou Samurai. Or anything else under $100 that anyone can recommend. I already have a Laguna, so for my 2nd reel, I am only prepared to spend a smaller amount. Many thanks.

I posted the same question about a year back. Quite a few people had experienced corrosion problems with the bearings in the Samurai so I went for the avenger. The avenger is really great value and I have bought another one since. If you are getting reel specifically for bream I would go for the 15 rather than the 20 though.

There's a reason why you can get a 7BB reel (Samurai) for under $100 and about $150 if you go the Kastor, you'd get 4 BBs... You won't get something for nothing basically... I was told there's crap ball bearings and good ones. Which do you think a reel with 7 BBs under $100 will have?
For that money, I'd look for the slighly older model of Daiwas and I'm a great fan of the daiwa Regal series preferably the Regal Z or Regal X. Beautiful reel... |

Sorry, kind of new to this but why a 15 and not 20? Smaller size reel, less line, is it to help easier casting only?
Yeah I have an Okuma EB30 with baitrunner and pretty happy with the Okumas, never had a problem with it.

Its lighter too if you use a smaller reel. Makes repetitive casting a lot more pleasant. Also Fireline comes in 125yd spools (you can get 300yd spools for a lot more!) and in the smallest reels it fits in nicely with only a little backing needed. Seeing how you're not going to get too many bream spooling you so... I like to use the smallest i can get.

Hi Carol,
I have a Daiwa Samurai 4000 and I'm not too pleased with the bearings on them. Having owned a Okuma Avenger 15 and 20 myself, I would say the choice of the two depends on the rod that you intend to put it on. I use my Av 15 on a 1-3kg ultra light rod so it balances nicely and the Av 20 on a slightly heavier rod. The Av 15 feels a lot lighter than the 20 and you end up less tired after a whole day's casting... Cheers! Yogi |

Yeah, I'm looking towards the Okuma, any positive feedbacks on Samurai from anyone?
For one with no knowledge, I usually base on prices and the Samurai is more expensive than the Avenger, so to a Miss-Know-Nothing, I would assume that the Samurai would be better , but I really am leaning towards the Okuma being an Okuma fan and few people I know have one of them and have no complaints

As Chunqx said the size and the weight can become an issue if your going to be casting all day. I have a 20 which was fine but then tried my brother's 15. It made a noticeable difference so I got a 15 for myself. Haven't been close to being spooled yet (40cm bream and trevs haven't done it), but I live in hope.

the size of the reel also depends on the rod.
Not all rods are weighted the same. No point going the smallest reel if U can fish with it properly. Wat rod U gonna put the new reel on?? |

Gees, it's great to get some help from so many.
I am using my Laguna on the Graphite USA, and thinking of getting an Avenger 15 or 20 for the Abo Morrum, which is a heavier rod than the Graphite USA. Yeah, didn't think of the repetitiveness of casting indeed. Just borrowing a friend's Avenger 20 and will be trying it out in 1/2 an hour on the Abu Morrum to see what it is like.

Nath your not really trying to say okuma are better quality then daiwa are you, maybe if you think so go down to the complete angler in the city and ask to have alook at a few daiwa reels, it might change your opinion just slightly.

Thanks Guys!
I'm getting the Avenger 20 or maybe 15, eeer no 20 no 15! Boy I can't decide! Found the Avenger 20 on the Abu Morrum rather heavy but I guess I'm used to using the Graphite USA which is a lot lighter. I am sure with the 15 it would be slightly lighter but since I am not prepared to loose the big one so guess I'll have to get the Avenger 20! Thanks for your help! And I finally reached "Mature Bream" YES! Cheers!
