reel service in W.A... where?

Could any west oz bream head tell me where a reel service centre is. I have a little whisker tournament that is feeling a little heavy to wind. I didnt realize how tight it was until I compared it to a couple of new reels. I've stripped it down as much as I can, but I'm having trouble getting to the main bearing on the shaft. I just know I'll destroy it if I push the issue. Sending to Perth is no big prob, in fact sending East is no biggy either. Thanks. Craigio.

John Devitt all the way.
You should see what he can do with a reel. Crazy stuff!
More than worth the money!

Just to add, even though I already added it to another post. John is going to come along to the Breamers Day on Sunday, either for the morning session or for the bbq, so if anyone wants to have a chat to him I would suggest you come along

Cheers

Mim

Thumbs up

Hi Guys

the work that John Devitt does is intricate and is aimed at maximising the original components of the reel. Sometimes he can improve the reel with a modification but this is not always possible. To get a reel serviced by John will mean that at least all shims, bushes, bearings and washers have been inspected and replaced as required according to the owners instructions. The reel is lubed with the best quality oil and grease. The cost $ is relative to the amount of work you want done. Give him a call to get a better idea of what is possible for your reel. You just may find that doing so will save the purchase of another reel.

I forgot to add what has been done to the four

SHIMANO STRADIC ST 1000 FH that we own.
  • the drag has been made smoother by the addition of a component
  • the reel is tighter and smoother
  • it is shimmed to our personal preferences regarding winding torque

Mim uses a RH wind and I wind LH and cos' I'm a boy and she a girl means that we use our equipment differently. John is working on improving the Stradic drag further as they come standard with only one felt washer. He is part way through that process and we have that first development in our reels. The advantage of talking to John Devitt means that he will do his best to get your reel working at the highest level per your requirements.

Yes he did Richo.

He feels they are good for the money, but that there are better reels out there, and after working on our reels he feels they are now great reels.

Richo, come along on Sunday, even if it is only for the bbq, that way you can ask away as much as you like. John loves to talk about reels as it is his passion (along with his grandkids ). If you can't come along, just phone him and ask, he is more than happy to answer any questions.

Cheers

Mim

Cheers mim, always thought the stradics were pretty good value, after a touch up from John im sure they`ll be as you said smoother tighter and all the rest.

He has done a couple of my reels in the past, and does a darn good job, Ive been quite impressed. But as Ive never had a stradic (always considered but never had) I was curious on his opinion because to me johns knowledge is probably second to none, and his opinion is valued.

cheers and yeah i`ll probably pop down Sunday for a nosy and chat.

adding this...

Hi Richo

for the $ that we spend on reels it is not unreasonable to question their true value against quality. Aust is a relatively small market and we pay a premium for reels. The USA retails Stradics $100 cheaper than Aust for the very same item. The USA price is more indicative of their true value. Smoothness in reels comes from the quality of the machining in a nice stiff frame with very tight tolerances. That is what you will pay extra $ for as the volume produced are lower. The best example I have seen is the Daiwa Certate. It is an awesome piece of machining.

Certate

JP,

I'm proud to say a Certate 2000 now resides on my dropshot. Feels like a sensational reel....everything is so positive and perfectly machined. Worth a few dollars though.

Cant help but add that the certate2000 is precisely the reason I began questioning my little tournament. Mine arrived last week and theres not a day go by where I dont bring it out an have a few pretend casts, it lovely. I feel now that there has been more input on the subject that when my little reel comes back it will be sensational. I ordered it from harbord tackle supply in 1992 when they used to have that massive catalogue, I got it on a runout, $470 down to $270, its beaut, the line roller is oversize and ceramic, quite unusual (to me at least). Cant wait to get her back. Cheers.
