Metaloid

Here is a pretty reel!!

Anyone know where I can get my hands on one here? I can order from the US for under $140AUD but would prefer to buy locally.

Part one of my plan is in place. I picked up a Okuma MD30 (metaloid) at A-Mart All Sports here in Underwood today - an absolute fluke at $93.99!!!

It's a reel honey - excuse the pun! Very happy. It feels very solid and the action is just damn poetry in motion. My Daiwa Laguna is nice (but this is smoother and nicer!).

Whatever happened to the "dark and dull is best" theory for rod and reel finishes?

Steve Starling wears a blue shirt with green pants so that he blends with the sky and grass/trees when fishing close to clear water, but then he uses a shiny bright reel and rod that must flash brightly in the sun for all the fish to see.

Some of these new reels (the Okuma Metalloid esp.) are so bright and flashy that they are beginning to look more like jewels than tools.

I arrive in a shiney new aluminium boat, with a white shirt and red cap. I use a flashy reel and I have a big silver watch on. I wear sunglasses that must reflect light at some stage and even the motor on my boat is a bright white.

Are you trying to tell me something?

When I go diving, I often swim on my back looking up (Manta DohDohDohDoh & Sharks) and honestly if fish can see things out of the water at more than around 45 degrees I'd be surprised. The way light is refracted seems to me they'd be hard pressed seeing me unless I was pretty near right on top of them. And of course, they can hear me well before then. And, below a certain depth you can't even see where the sun is on a sunny day.

I'd like to see any studies done on what exactly fish can see.

I'm not sure what the answers are Kevin :-)

I used to do a lot of skindiving and I know what you mean about what you can and can't see when looking up from under the water.

It's just that I read articles on "stalking" fish (esp. in shallow water) and they say keep low, wear dull camoflage colours, don't make sudden movements, and there have been rods in the past with matt type finishes to prevent sun glinting off them, etc.

This advice seems contradicted by the current generation of spinning reels.

Another note about Okuma Metaloid reels in Australia, I saw yesterday that DohDohDohDoh Outdoors have rear drag metaloids in stock.
At least in the Geelong shop anyway.
