Daiwa Certate Circlip Hack

Saw this on a site - He says the original diameter of the factory circlip is 0.5mm (but there are inconsistencies with his measuring and AFW stated diameters) but he reckons the 39kg stuff works

AFW make a 0.51mm in Stainless and you could make alot of circlips out of that roll

So I'm hoping someone will list all the reasons that making your own circlips is a bad idea

I mean, obviously - I've already gone and bought some coz thats the way I operate - and I can use it for other toothy projects I have later in the year - but if you foresee catastrophic failure - let me know.

Because although I havent lost a circlip yet - from what I read - Its only a matter of time

I've done reel repair on a largish scale, and never needed to diy clips

I think it'd be better to master your work practices to ensure you don't lose them

Sorry if that sounds like a jerk thing to say

Also, if your working on someone else's reel, I'd be using genuine clips. Most tackle shops would have them out the back for a couple bucks anyways.

But, good idea if you're in a pinch I guess

NiTi is a DohDohDohDohDoh to work with abnd the origional clips are best to stay with just edg up the end for future ease.

I have heard of people using the daiwa spring clips wich are hexaginal rather than round, they have less spring force and are easier to remove however.

Might refocus my efforts into making a fully sealed circlip containment unit instead

I did call a tackle shop in the city and he said they stock too many different types of reels to stock spare parts for them all. But I dont think any of the tackle shops I go to specialize in reel maintenance.

I have always called them Jesus springs, pretty rare that they do not live up to their name.

Yeah you're right - a plastic bag inside that box would help contain it even further

Looks like a modern, pneumatic version of the gift they gave the padre in the aussie classic movie The Ödd Angry Shot
