Who makes good thick worm hooks for saltwater?

I need a few around this size but i cant find the name of them - they come standard, in a sebile magic swimmer 130mm

Decided to roll the dice on some ebay cheapies - they looked so good in the photo and the measurements were close enough to what I wanted

At around 7c each, I was happy with the purchase price. But I still had to run them through a series of tests before using them.

Mangled one with some pliers to gauge strength - verdict - strong like bull.

Then came the sharpness test - verdict - not quite as sharp as the originals. They could catch on a thumb nail but not from acute angles. 5 licks each with a diamond file and they were catching from all angles.

Still havent seen how they react to salt water but everything else in the add is true so I'll see how it goes

They could be Daiichi 360 Worm hooks in Size 5/0.
These are a heavier gauge than the smaller sizes.

The ones you got from overseas won't like the saltwater as they are only plated with Red.
All the top brands double coat plate with gold then red over the top.

I wonder how they get a sharp tip with 3 coats of plating.

So if I touch up my hooks with a diamond file - I'm basically opening the door for rust. But if the plating stays in tact they will be ok?

I've given one of them a swim and no immediate signs of rust but I will keep and eye on it. Might have to sponge them down after use

Just gave the original black hook a few scrapes with a diamond file and put them side by side

It is best not to file sharpen Chemically sharpened hooks.
If they loose their point just replace them.

The plating coats are so fine that it doesn't effect the point.
With the Chemically Sharpened point the hooks go through a series of acid baths to remove any imperfections caused by machining.
Hence when you look at the enlarged photo they are a perfect round conical point.

Ok cool thanks for that. I'll leave the rest with their coatings intact. They were sharp enough to begin with, I was just being pedantic


I cant promise I'll throw the dull ones out though. I've got so good at sharpening hooks that I can tell how exactly how many licks of the file they will need just by sticking the point in my nail

Yeah I did notice how thin the coating was while filing it off.

Theres no doubt the originals are a great hook - its just too early to tell whether they are 20 times better than the 7c hooks

If my spots didnt have so many dumped bikes, shopping trolleys, chairs from restaurants and various other junk covering the bottom - the longevity of the hook would be a bigger concern.

As it stands - they get veteran status if they last 3 sessions As long as these red ones can survive 3 swims through the saltwater wedge - I'll be happy with them

Within regards to filing off the 'protective' coating - run some VCI paper / tabs in your box and it shouldn't corrode up near as quick - if ever.

That way you can file them all to be ready for action.

Yeah I've been sharpening hooks with a diamond file since 3/6/14 - and none of them have ever lasted long enough to rust but I dont do alot of fishing in pure salt water these days

But if it becomes a problem - the VCI paper will get a run
