Reel Prices..

Hi,

Why would one buy a Daiwa with say 5 ball bearings over something like an okuma with 9 ball bearings at half the price of the fore mentioned?

Thanks

Overall quality of the product? Types of bearings used? Metal body for the reels? And finally personal preferance. These are all the questions I ask myself before I buy a reel. Cheers!

I think "overall product quality" is the obvious answer.

I usually go with you get what you pay for, so would have to agree with you on that.

don't be bamboozeled with the bearings as the saying goes, like every thing, there is quantity and quality, chinese made bearing's turned out by the masses turn up in chinese produced products (funny thing that),they cannot be compared to japanese bearing's in japanese reels, anyway the proof is in the pudden!!

Cagney, I think you will find that alot of the big brand like Shimano and Daiwa have already got factories in China, Malaysia, Thailand and other developing countries to keep cost down. Hard to get real "made in Japan" stuff nowadays.
However, given that Okuma's pretty big in Taiwan and the rest of the world, their reels should be pretty decent as well.
Cheers!

Yes, but only to an extent. You do get what you pay for but you also pay for the name and the prestige, without neccecarily getting better quality.
Ie Not many would argue that a Stella is a great reel, but is twice as good as Sustain, Three times better than a Tica Taurus or 5 times better than Inspira. No freakin way.
Basically once you get past about the $200 mark you pay a lot more money for only small improvements in performance.

At the end of the day you have to be open minded, way up "all" the variables and make a decision that you're happy with, Not buy a reel because its a status symbol or to keep other people happy.

Been some great points made and angrys in particular.
Once reels get over the $200-$300 mark, you begin to lose a lot of VALUE.
For example, a daiwa luvias will you back around the $300 mark. I dare say youd struggle to find a better reel for the price. Jump up to a shimano stella which will ost you over twice as much t around $650 even i fyou buy overseas.
You get a few more bearings essentially for an additional $350 odd dollars.
If you stick in the "mid-range" of reels you should be right mate.
