Offshore setup/light jig

Hi
Not really sure where to ask this question though I'm hoping to find some answers here to get me looking in the right direction. Primarily i fish bream as my past time fishing. and sorry if this is all over the place.

I have had the opportunity to head offshore 35m-100m chasing snapper/pearl perch etc. Mainly been using a paternoster rig with size 4-8 snapper weights.

Couple of years ago was using a tyrnos 30 with 50lb braid and a 24kg broomstick of a rod (cheap). was mega heavy and seemed slow. Changed that to the penn 850 i had and have been using a T-curve revolution offshore 6-12kg rod. This has been a reasonable combo and was faster over the tyrnos setup. last time i was offshore I was finding that i seemed to be fighting the gear. heavy rod and heavy reel.

I have also been doing some soft plastic (half ounce to 1.5 ounce) and some micro jigs about the 30-40g mark and using a samiki 5-10kg 7' spin rod with a 4000 ci4. its great and nice and light.

Im wanting a combo i can fish these sort of waters with a combo that i can use the paternoster and do some lighter jigs (40-say 120g) and also possibly put a live bait on and send down. Thinking something like and overhead reel and rod. Can this be achieved?

Ill keep the stradic as a plastic combo but i dont feel (not that i have tried) that it would be much use at being used for paternosters.

Maybe im better with another spin setup but over the shimano 4000 size i dont know what im up against for capability.

Not worried at this stage of cost and happy to spend a little bit. Was sort of looking at Jigging master PE3 reels or talicas but its doing my head in and not sure about it all.

if anyone can help would be much appreciated.

cheers
ryan

A Major Craft Crostage PE2-4 matched up with a 6000 Shimano Saragosa, spooled up with PE3 line sounds like it would match perfectly for what you are after mate. It can do all of the things you are looking at doing and has a lot of grunt down low in the rod when needed. Though the only problem is it wont be able to work the lighter jigs, it's better suited from 100g jigs and up.

Hey mate i use a 0.8-1.2 pe rated bay jig stick and a 2508 size reel for what you are describing.

However a more rounded and considerably cheaper place to start would be:
Rod: Daiwa Blast bay jig J61S-2/3 20-120gm Pe rating 1-2
Ree: Daiwa Freams 2015 2500

This will keep your outfit plenty light and has all the grunt you could ever want. Make sure you spend the extra and buy some quality 8 strand jigging braid.

In terms of jigs id reccomend maria shore trickers, palms slow blatts and shimano lucanus jigs.

Goodluck have fun.

To be honest, to get the best result you will need 2 separate combos. Completely different styles using massive leads to 40g jigs...

i have to agree and i should of said, dont go putting snapper leads or livies on your jig stick that would make me sad.

If u want to bait fish buy a cheap dedicated bait outfit.

Alright cheers for the responses. I'll check those out.
With the saragosa is there one slightly better. Just wanting to cover It a bit more.

Any over head ideas then?

With the rods I waseems hoping that jig rods would work with baiting (paternosta).

Any suggestions on more that kind of rod?

Sorry for the questions but I'm finding my arm isn't as strong as it used to be with computer rsi.

Dad has just bought a Daiwa Furuno (Luvias DA custom) in 3000 size and has it spooled with 200m odd of 30lb pe 2 paired with a Daiwa infeet 661 pe 0.6-1.5 and it feels amazing. Bought both in almost brand new con. for under $350 sh. Gunna try using it for up to 10kg snapps and I recon it should handle them. I'd guess east coast snapps are a fair bit smaller so should easily handle them. Just search for cheap deals if money is an issue.
For heavier use something like a slammer 560 or saragosa SW in 6000 with 30lb or so, and run it on a glassy like a silstar power tip. Plenty for those sorts of fish and much less likely to snap the rod in such rough types of fishing. Overheads are ok but give much less game for smaller species IMO. It also sucks in deep water and drifting situations as line doesn't come off as smooth or fast from the reel. It can also end in nice birds nest if a good fish takes you on the drop.

If you would consider a custom rod, a look at CTS blanks will open your world to a host of possibilities. For what you are describing, I would suggest this series of blanks, http://ctsfishing.com/product/baymaster-spin/

Blanks can be made into spinning or plug rods, depending on your preference in reels.
