Black bream lures - heading south

Taking a few weeks off from the 6th March, heading south and spending 2 weeks in an area from Lakes Entrance in Victoria to Eden, NSW. I have never fished for black bream.Taking a yak and have no idea what colour or type of lure to take as we don't get them on the Manning.

Been told dark green, black and natural colours in hards and softs.

I like the look of Wonboyn lake and keen to give it a crack?!!

Any good accommodation (not to exy), cafe etc would be appreciated as the boss is coming with me.

Hi Trev.
I am sure you'll enjoy your trip and fishing for blacks in particular.

First of all, get some suspending or slow floating minnow style lures. Atomic shads, shiners, SX40 or 43, Pontoon Crackjacks 38 and 48 in med and deep.
In cranks I would recommend Cranka crank, Atomic and Chubby 38 in brown suji colour.
Blacks just love the lure in their face sitting motionessly so leave the cranking at home. It will be twitch-twitch-pause- Bang! type of fishing.

Colour wise, brownish, green and more neutral colours for clear water and dark, matt or bright or chartreuse colours for murky stained water.
Plastics are probably would be similar in style and colour to what you use back home.

Laydown minnow in black/gold
Jackall chubby in suji brown
Cranka crank in pink bitts
80mm squidgy wriggles

That should cover all bases.

If you have the time, you would almost certainly like Mallacoota. It's at the end of a dead end road, but it's worth the drive. It's a great spot to take the wife too, as there's a few shops. It's quite civilised and the fishing is good. On the negative side, the open lake can get a bit rough for a kayak from time to time.

Bemm River is also a good location. It's a lot more basic than Mallacoota, but there is a pub and a caravan park. Once again, the lake can cut up rough for kayakers at times. The river is great, but launching spots are few and hard to access.

The next town heading west is Marlo. It's well worth stopping at for at least a few days. It's at the mouth of the Snowy River. It's a more kayak friendly location as the estuary doesn't chop up too badly. There's not much for the wife to do there, but there is a pub and a motel, plus some holiday units. Orbost isn't far away, which offers supermarkets and some shopping.

Lake Tyers is also well worth a visit. It's nice and close to Lakes Entrance, so your wife should be able to keep herself amused.

Lure wise, I suggest that you take a variety of longer skinner HB lures for black bream. Daiwa Double Clutches are great, in both sizes, but anything that might represent a minnow seems to work the most consistently, IMO. You will want them to be suspenders, or very, very slow floaters and fish them very slowly, with lots of long pauses.

You will find a mixture of black bream and yellow fin bream along that section of coastline. There are more blacks though.

It should be a great trip. It's a lovely part of the country.

although black bream fishing can be fun, I strongly suggest you try bass and estuary perch fishing if you haven't done it before. The surface fishing is second to none and you are in one of the best parts of Australia to do it. Plus bream are generally a by catch of fishing for perch.

The lures suggested are great, but I would also throw in 100mm squidgy wrigglers in evil minnow. These are my go to lure in many east gippsland systems to throw deep in the snags when rigged on a weedless jighead and it proves itself time and time again.

Even better, give Nordy a ring and ask his advice. As a Breammaster member and newcomer to his area I know that he'll be really helpful.
