Luvias problem

Hey guys

Recently bought a 2004 Luvias from a user here, Japanese manuals etc. All seemed well and I don't think there was anything wrong with it when I received it. However, I noticed it was a bit noisy on the weekend and is now a little crunchy intermittently when I turn the handle. It sounds like it is when the spool goes up and down, a bit gritty like sand. I take very good care of it.

Send to Daiwa Australia for service, or what do I do?

Sounds like a side handle bearing.

Hey mate, how can I find out, and if this is the culprit can I order the part to avoid paying a full service? Apparently the AU Luvi is identical. It's easily my favourite reel so I'm pretty bummed.

It's hard to know for sure but sometimes you can hear/feel the exact bearing that's playing up. if it is the side handle bearing it's an easy fix. Just pull out the culprit and take it to a bearing shop so they can match and replace. Easy to change.

First off, take the spool off and see if the noise still exist.

Thanks mate. Any idea where I can do this in Sydney? Haha. Is the handle bearing in the handle itself, or the body where it screws in to?

It's in either side of the body of the reel and usually responsible for the issues you're describing.

Based on your description, if it has intermittent gritty oscillation, there would potentially be a minor damage on the pinion gear and/or drive gear.

I have a Certate had almost identical (again, based on your description) problem only after a few weeks use. It turns out the problem was caused by a damaged pinion gear (and eventually main gear).

However, it is hard to diagnose without actually feeling and looking at the reel. Adam could be right, too.

This sounds worse than a bearing - Daiwa would need to fix this?

There also seems to be some grooves underneath the drag knob which don't look like they should be there. Like palpable lines in the plastic. Is this normal?

Theoretically, yes, if it is under warranty. The Certate I mentioned in my previous post was purchased from Japan, so I sent it back to my supplier in Japan and had it fixed for free (under warranty).

That plastic plate should be smooth. Care to post a photo of it?

I'm actually less concerned about the noise now, I think it is literally a bit of sand/grit everywhere. I blame my mate's ute tray. It can't get under the rotor, right?

However, the drag knob is a bit of a concern. The underside of the drag knob where you can more or less see the grooves I'm talking about feels a bit dry and dusty; a dark residue comes off if you rub it with fingertips...you can see where it's imprinted in the grease when the cap is off.

Snagsbream,this Luvias you bought from me was purchased from DohDohDohDohDohDohDohDoh,and has full Australian warranty.Sounds like lack of care,as it was A1 when sold to you.i will dig out the receipt today,and post it off to you.Cheers,Paul.

There shouldn't be groves in the drag knob like that because when you pull drag, the plate that holds the drag waders in place doesn't spin. It can only have come from sand or dirt getting in there when you tighten the drag up. I know from experiance that ute trays are a fishing reels worst nightmare, sounds like some dirt and sand has penetrated some moving parts. If you're confident you can strip the reel down, clean it out and reassemble it.

It is likely. Especially when the rotor is the so-called Air Rotor.

This reel could use some TLC. Like Adam said, if you are confident and competent, take the reel apart and give it a good clean. Alternatively, send it back to Daiwa to have it looked at. Bare in mind, the repair might not fall under warranty.
