Blading questions

Gday,

Blading out the yak last night was a lot of fun, but there a few things I think I struggled with. I was getting regular bites on the lure, mainly on the drop but it was a struggle to turn a lot of these into hook ups. Also, when I did have a fish it fell off/pulled the hook more times than not.

So, using twin trebs straight out of the packet, whats the best way to strike? Are the hooks easy to pull? Would straigt through be better? Ive got the retrieve down, the areas to fish down, just need some help on the finishing touches

Sometimes that just happens mate, some days they just smash them and hook them self other days they just nip at the lure.
Strike like you would with plastics to help set the hooks with straight through normally you have to wind the fish on then strike
You will get the hang of it

Cheers

Pete

Cool thanks for that, I was striking the same as I was a plastic, to try and get the hook set well, so if I'm not doing anything glaringly wrong, I'll keep at it

Try a softer fluorocarbon leader with a little bit of stretch in it and run at least a rods length, it just gives that little more give when the initial load hits the lure, especially if you are using a fast or ex fast rod.

What do you suggest? I'm running 3-4m of Sunline bream special in 6lb at the moment.

ZX stinger hooks. Great hook up rate and with a single hook you generally drop less fish.

I found I was pulling hooks as well on a faster tapered rod, as soon as I started using a slower taper the hook up rate was a lot better. Something similar to the Samurai 203 - ish

203s they have heavy tips I'd try one In The hand before u buy

There are cheaper rods out there that are a suited one being the Nordic stage areal has moderate taper and my mate swears by his

Also look at the k2 samaki there's a fella on here that liked it as a hb rod

Hope this helps

So I'm thinking I'll give the assist hooks another go and see if they hold a bit better. Ecogear have a youtube vid where they guy was pulling hooks striking but landing fish just winding them on. Is that the best way to use a zx, or is it just a matter of finding what works on the day?

Yeah I don't really strike. Just lift the rods tip up and wind it on.

Spot on. That's the #1 solution.
