Scent on HBs

Latest issue of ModFish has an article by Kim Bain (Hmmmm!) on using scent on lures, even HBs.

Anybody using "Gels or Pastes" on their HBs, if so whats the goss?

What about aerosols, apparently the dippers will take the gold of your scorp pronto?

I know the SPs are regularly dipped into the "biteme" but has anybody in the West tested scents on hardbodies?

G'day Mark
I've always used scent on my Hb's, usually just Halco Catch Scent...
I went to an info night a couple on weeks ago and there was a bit of talk about acetone based scents taking paint off Hb's, eating away Sp's & stuffing skirts on spinnerbaits...

Did I see a post here earlier about tying some wool or other fibre to the rear treble (like a fly) and giving that a douse with scent.

Hi,
I'm with Slab sides. All my HBs get a small dose of Halco Catch Scent before they hit the water.
Cheers,
Rigzz

Try the wool on your back treble its a winner. Riggz I found it calmed the Mundine micro mullets down abit as well. I have also been mucking around with emulsifying ointment/pawpaw ointment and mixing the ecogear capsules. Keep trying different stuff players,

I'm sure I'm not the first to make home made scents and this recipe may already appear somewhere on this sight. But it was new to me when I came up with it

I got frustrated with store bought scents so I just made my own from locally sourced ingrediants.

All you need is cooking oil, salt and crush up what ever the bream eat in your local area. Mix it all up in a jar so you can dip your plastics in and the results are more than satisfactory. Fish can still resist and you still have to pay attention to your retrieve but it certainly does help the bream make up their mind

I've been trialling blood worm, mussel/barnacle, crab and shrimp. Just keep some cloth or material around the jar to catch the drips and dont get any on your hands while fishing.

You can carry all the scents on board. Dip and retrieve according to the most likely food source in a given area.

Yellowdoor,
sounds like a fair bit of effort to me. I presume you need to make a fresh batch for each trip unless you're using some kind of preservative as well.

The oil and salt act as preservatives. The bait collecting takes a bit of time but I store back up supplies in the freezer. Making up a batch takes about 2 mins once you have the ingrediants

I've been playing around with a modification to StumpJumpers for scents.

If you look, the SJs have a flat rear on them, and it is quite easy to drill a couple of small holes in the rear, which then allows you to inject scent/oil etc into the body of the lure.

My experience is that when retrieving, the scent is drawn out of the back of the lure, leaving a trail, probably due to the laws of fluid dynamics and the vacuum effect at the rear of the lure as it moves through the water, though I haven't completed the simulations on my cray supercomputer just yet.

This also allows you to easily change the floatation of the SJ, as with about 1-2 mls injected, they become more like a slow floater, and a bit more they will start to sink. They have such an agressive action, that even loaded up, they still manage to wiggle quite nicely.

The scent will eventually empty out and typically be replaced by the water which seems to be drawn in, though I am still playing with the size of holes. Usually you can continue to smell the scent long after there is anything left in the lure which can't hurt.

All Patience Pending...

David

Would this be classed as illegal for the upcoming AOY round in Perth?

I think the scent on HB is used primarily to erase the human scent from handling the HB
