Who makes what motor ?

Hi all

In the market to upgrade my 25hp to a bigger 40, but with so many different brands I want to know what is cheap and you don't touch and what is just rebadged.

Now I understand that mercury is rebadged as Tohatsu is that correct ?

Cheers
andy

No thats not correct, Brunswick marine own Mercury and for that matter Mariner too, Brunswick also have a 40% stake in Tohatsu. Thats the only connection.

Out board companies used to share parts between each other and I know Johnson and evinrude had a connection. Think that's why there's no Johnson anymore. Have a look at yamaha, I had a 3yl 40hp 2 stroke and it was great.

Can't say this for sure but when i was looking a while back I was told that Japanese Mercs 30hp and below came from the Tohatsu Factory. Not this is a slight on the motors at all - I had an 18hp tohatsu and it was a great motor.

In terms of options in the 40hp class look at the main brands of Mercury, Yammy, Suzuki, Honda, Evinrude etc I found the more you look the more you find stories of positives and negatives in these motors

My Tohatsu 18hp was one of the best motors I've had. For me personally I'd either choose between Evinrude, Yammy or Honda.

I've had 2 40 hp. One 96 merc USA great motor had a few dramas with the electrics but they were fixed by mercury. Now I have a Jap 40 mercury 2stroke. Great motor built by tohatsu. Had it for 5 years. I did go through a power head but it was fixed under warranty. Great motor hasn't missed a beat since. I do a lot of hours trolling and big runs and it's still going strong. Highly recommend these motors.

Some tohatsus are rebadged as a "mercury light"

They carry the same warranty

The genuine mercury 30 / 25 15 / 10 have forward and reverse on the tiller meaning you simply turn the throttle back or forward.

I was told that mercury got their advanced electrical technology from suzuki and their advanced anti corrosion technology from
tohatsu which is why they offer a 2/3/4 year warranty --- mechanical / electrical / corrosion

A few years back one company was making the engine blocks for evinrude / johnson / yamaha.. but im not sure about now days.

I have an early 40 hp four stroke Mercury which has a Yamaha power head, I have had a couple of minor issues but you can expect that on a motor with a bit of age, but still goes great

Thanks for all the comments

So look for the bigger brand names and dont rule out tohatsu, I have heard some good stuff about them.

I have found a Yamaha 40 2 stroke but been the 1st time I have bought a motor what do I look for when you go to inspect it ?

Cheers
Andy
