Surf Spin Question
Is there any reason a surf spin reel in a smaller size like the Bull's Eye 5080 couldn't be used on rare occasions on a shorter rod for lures or live baiting inshore?
Thinking of something like that as a surf reel because I don't have anything remotely suitable anymore and I'm heading for a surf session in a few weeks. I was also hoping it could fill a gap for a medium size inshore spinner. Basically one reel to look after all those kinds of fishing I do once in a blue moon and don't really have gear for anymore. Would there be issues with the amount of line a distance reel lets out on short rods? I read some stuff online to that effect but it wasn't very scientific At 445g with heaps of drag and line capacity the Bull's Eye looks like a candidate to do a few jobs.http://www.plat.co.jp/shop/catalog/p...f-fishing.html |

Why not have a look at a 4500 size daiwa or 8000 Shimano... Like a saltist or stradic. This will cover both applications well... Dedicated surf reels are large in size irrespective of weight and the gear ratio is always a killer... You may as well look for versatility rather than such specificity in a reel if its use is to fill a briars spectrum.

I have to admit the long cast idea was attractive. Plenty of options in convnetional spin reels for sure.
I appreciate the gearing and weight can be unusual on a lot of them but the Bulls Eye there sits at 445gm and 80 something cm/ retrieve. Ball park with typical spinners right? Or am I missing something? |

I dont think it would be appropriate for lures (plastics/Hb's/vibes), I reckon you could be throwing a few loops due to the spool size as your taking up slack line during the retrieve.
Then again i dont know this as a fact as I dont know anyone who has used surf cast reels for lure fishing (other than throwing heavy metal slugs), just something I think could happen. That said, if its on rare occasions and you wont really be doing much lure fishing with it, then you could probably get away with it. |

Yeah the whole throwing loops thing has me wondering. Surf spinners aren't a big thing is Australia I guess. Might be lucky to find anyone with much experience using them.

Japanese reels like that are meant to be used for heavy casting from the shore for flatfish, kisu or whatever. I think they don't use lures with those reels. Spool's too big. The rods they use in conjunction with these reels are freaking long as. 13ft+ long.
If you want something for the inshore live baiting/luring like you said, opt for a reel with SW concepts. Would be more practical and last you longer. Surf fishing maybe.

I don't know your location, but I take it, you will be targeting salmon or something of a similar size from the beach. The best outfit for this sort of fishing is a good quality rod about 9 feet long, rated 4-8kg, with a good quality 2500 to 3000 size reel, spooled with some 6 to 8kg braid. An outfit like this will cast lures up to around 30g the distance required and it will be a delight to use, all day. What's more, you will really enjoy catching these modest sized fish on tackle that's proportional with their size.
