changing handles

Hey guys,

I have an RCS i-knob to replace a t-knob on the da custom but when I put it on, there was a large amount of sideways play.. what do you put in there to make it fit properly?

Cheers
jake.

There will be 2 different sized plastic shims and thin metal shims that come in the packaging with the I knob as well as a tool to remove the end cap, add and subtract these shims until you get a snug fit.

You just have to add some metal shims to it
to get rid of the play in the handle.

Also a lot of people don't actually know this but there are 2 sizes of metal washers, they vary slightly in thickness, almost can't even tell with the naked eye. If you get the right size washers in there your knob will spin freely and have zero movement side to side. Some people are happy with their knob only moving a tiny amount side to side as they don't know that if they add the thinnest washer they will have zero play.

jake.
sideways movement sounds more like the bearings from the knob you took off? check inside the old one and make sure you have both the inside and outside nylon or ball bearing to suit. the washers/spacers/shims make up the length to fit but sounds like you don't have all the parts yet.

what bradzino said

if you are talking about 3 mm of play (the height of the plastic collar), use a small screwdriver or even a paper clip bent straight and knock out that extra plastic collar that sits WITHIN the handle from the underside of the T knob

shine some light into the handle from both ends, you'll be able to see the side where a plastic collar / bearing has not been removed (to be put into the i knob)

see pic

luvi should either have a bearing and a collar within the cavity of the knob (poor alternative for a bearing) or two plastic collars on either side of the knob.

Yep got the plastic collar out.. no bearing though. Its almost perfect but there is still a tiny amount of sideways play I cant sort out. Its such a small amount that if I put one of the little washers in the screw tightens on the knob and doesnt allow it spin freely but without it it plays a bit. Oh well.. I'll just have to live with.

(Probably wont sleep for two nights thinking about it and end up trying to source the thinnest possible washer available)

Thanks for the help guys.

You won't find a metal bearing in a stock luvi just the plastic bush's, I had the same issue with a luvi (sideways play) so I understand your frustration, after adding all provided shims then had it tighten too much as you described stopping the handle from spinning once the screw was tightened, I solved this by grabbing a couple of extra thin shims off a mate and removing one of the thick ones hasn't had a problem since . Just keep tinkering and you will find the right ballance
