Bought My FIRST boat :P

Hey Guys,

Just got my hands on my first boat, its an awesome little deal I managed to snap up. Will post pics later regarding it! Just have a question, I did find a thread with practically everything I needed, except it was 3 years ago and for the wrong state

The motor is 15hp, so will need a licence,

QUEENSLAND

Can I operate this boat if I stay under 10 knots without a licence? Ive heard you can...

Can I do trips with someone who has a licence and get them to sign me off instead of doing the practical test with the Department of transport, and just do the theory with them?

Also, Does anyone do it cheaper then the incredible prices I've come across?

Cheers

Michael

Good stuff mate, with that motor you will need a licence but if you have a licensed person on board you will be fine. It doesn't matter what speed you go the way the law sees it is that the motor is capable of more than 10kn

Mate I had a 6 horse Zook DF6 on a 315 cherokee - great little economical tub for trolling and bashing walls in canals. I always had to watch myself as anything over 6 knots / planing hull required licensing (boat registered and <6 Hp did not require registration) - I was told that by a QLD water police officer when I got pulled up once for RBT.

Dont know how legit it is but always watched over my shoulder when was on the plane at WOT going places.

Like the advert on tele says "you cant put a old head on young shoulders". Learn life's teachings through others, life is only going to get harder with the economy and I am starting to think its easier to hold onto my Yak and keep being a smelly ole shore basher...

You know - at least your thinking about the future / money and their associated repercussions! Good one you lad!

They do say the happiest days for a boat owner is the day you buy the boat, and the day you sell it

Jokes - I've never owned one so I'd never know.

Money is there to use though Rooney. Have a reserve/mojo of a month or twos wages saved up for the unexpected, invest some (while you are young - use the power of long-term compounding interest to your benefit), cover your bills and then pay yourself some discretionary for spending on hobbies

Nothing wrong with having a boat. Just make sure you get out there and use it. The worst purchase is the one that sits unused

Completely off-topic but get a copy of "The Barefoot Investor" from your local library. Worth a read. Basic sensible financial advice. I wish when I was your age someone had given me the basic financial information

Happy sailing/driving/whatever

The harder you work the more people will expect from you, the more that you'll have to pay and the more taxes you will be bled of...

Opened your eyes to the TV and the current budget?

I think crying poor on here doesn't achieve anything - just states the current economic climate or current job status.

Let him cry poor - he's young and we all were in that poor state at some stage of our life. I was when I went to Uni for 5 years and still am working in retail... No failure to launch success story here either

The more you earn the more you spend the less you have

I'm in my 30s and earn enough but mortgage marriage and 3 kids mean I've never had so little cash!!
I went ten years spending my money on ME and it's a hard cycle to break once you have to be selfless so have fun and don't regret it .
Enjoy it champ!!!!!!
Good luck with the boat

Ive heard that a stack of times Sloth haha Nah, cheers mate, don't you worry, it'll get a work over!!! The Barefoot Investor? Ill look into it, thanks for the suggestion :P Tight lines bud!!

Hey Matt, Yes I guess I can say i look forward to that day? I don't regret any of it, thanks mate, hopefully can produce many reports with it to entertain myself

Twoshoes, I can't see your comment for some reason... only where SLAZMO has quoted it... I don't cry poor every post? haha... I made one post asking people on their suggestions for a reel that didn't require me forking out loads of money because i wasn't 'overly wealthy'. Here I just said nothings cheap? Because quite frankly its not, just think its a little ridiculous that you have to pay the 200-250 I saw for the 'exam'. Mate, after having a look through your threads, I can guarantee I enjoy my fishing 110% more than you do with my cheap gear and what I can afford then you do with your gear If you have a problem with me 'Crying poor' shoot me a PM and we can discuss it Thank you

Rooney don't sweat the "cheap" thing. You've got the right attitude. It's about loving your fishing no matter whether you're a sienna or a Stella. Keep it up and looking forward to many more reports from ya bud.
