Going to be doing my boat next, but first I have my 4WD drawers to finish. Doing the panels and want to cover them in marine carpet. Would like to hear what glues etc others haved used and what to keep an eye out or?

on my tinny deck i used "bear grip" which is a yellow glue that you apply then when its tacky you press the surfaces together...

we glued the carpet then the deck and we layed wooden dowells on the deck to hold the carpet up... then when the glue was tacky we pulled the wooden dowels out one by one and let the carpet settle into place...

having those dowells let us move the carpet around to get it exact over the deck before we dropped the surfaces together....

Exactly what bender has said only I used "Kwik Grip" and then got a paint roller that has not been used and rolled from the centre out.

I used "quik grip" as well, but don't use the gel. It was impossible to get good coverage on the back of the carpet. Letting the glue get tacking is really important. Once it's tacky and you apply pressure it won't be coming undone. Post up some drawer pics when your done. They are an excellent DIY task and literally save you thousands over buy from ORS, Outback, Black Widow etc.

This carpet job was done using Selleys Quick Grip.

Scubascott has summed it up well.

I used turf glue, it's the stuff they use to glue fake tennis court turf, bonds to just about anything and comes in bulk for big jobs, available at most hardware stores.

+1 for Selley's Quick Grip. Holds really well.

Cheers,

Dunlop turf glue is the stuff to use.. I have a mate that carpets stuff for a living i.e. speaker boxes etc and this is the stuff he uses.. It is waterproof, is only applied to one surface (not both like contact adhesive) and does not "go off" straight away like contact, so it gives you time to move the pieces around to position them perfectly..

It also goes on nice and thick and doesn't run, so it's great for edge pieces etc..

I just did my rod locker with this stuff after using contact in the past and I will never use contact adhesive again..

I also used the turf glue, not the easiest to work with, didn't bother with a comb in the end just a spatula. but worked well once I got used to it.

yeah.. a comb makes it pretty easy to work with I found.. gives a nice even coat.. the Dunlop branded stuff was great to work with as it is nice and thick and doesn't run everywhere..

Yep, I just recently recarpeted my decks on my boat using Selleys Kwick Grip Spray. It did an easy, quick and hassle free job. I just sprayed both surfaces waited a minute or two and all was good!
