Daiwa. What would you choose and why?

Ok guys I'm looking at buying two new reels one a light bream reel for Fluro and one a multi purpose with 8-10lb braid to chase everything from bream to snapper and squid.

My options are:
New Luvias 20xx and 25xx $260 each JDM prices
2007 certate 1500 & 2500 $350 each
2010 certate 2000 & 2500 $400 each
TDR 2508 $220 has a spare 2508 spool
Old model steez 2004 $500
Certate hyper custom 2500r $600

Ideally I'd like bang for buck and I'm mainly tossing up between the Luvias 2010 certate and the steez as the lighter reel and the Luvias TDR and 2010 certate as the multi purpose reel.

Does anyone have a direct comparison between the above reels and what would you choose and why? I'd like to support local but are the other reels almost twice as good as the Luvias?

Also can anyone justify the hyper custom over the other options?

Thanks in advance!

Jase ,

If you can afford it for the bream reel I would go steez hands down! I love mine and I'm sure a lot of fellow members would say the steez is in a league of its own.

As for a 10lb reel I saw floating around someone with a new in box airity and for $400 that would be my pick !!!

I used to use a 10' certate and it was pretty indestructible caught a lot of great fish and very salt water strong, would be my second pick

Either way all your choices are great

Good luck with your choice

hey mate, im not sure about the high end stuff but i have a luvias 2004 with 3lb fluoro on it. Great reel for that. Very light and a smooth drag. I also have. 2004 spool and put it on a caldia when i run 2 straight thru outfits. It does the job also. I have 4 caldias with 0.6PE and they're great.

Airity still has best drag hands down sadly. Bang for buck new Caldias look very nice, thinking of buying a few myself. But in that list the Luvias is an awesome compromise on all sides IMO.

I'm new to daiwa reels but I've got the latest 2004 luvias and certate.
Side by side I love the solid feel of the certate, drag feels smoother and more refined but quieter and let's go easier as well.
When I had shimanos I always liked the metal body reels over the ci4s too.

Cheers guys very helpful so far. These reels will add to my existing collection of an airity 2000, a gekabujin 2004, an Emeraldas 2506 all pre 2007 models, a 2007 Caldia Kix 1500 with 2000 spare spool and an 09 Caldia 2506.

I know why everyone raves about the airity and I wouldn't consider ever selling mine.

Am I right in saying that the TDR is just an old model Sol with a shallow spool?

Any reason you don't include the 2013 Certate as an option?
Under $400 here. http://digitaka.com/item.php?icid=126&id=962
Little bit heavier (20-30g) than the Luvias, but really built to last.

Then again a Steez for an extra $100ish (even if older model) would be tempting.

Can't go wrong with a JDM priced Luvias if you want bang for your buck. Seriously awesome reels!

The Luvias with JDM pricing is the only overseas option I really wanted to consider, the 2010 and 2013 certate are fairly similar internal so I'd rather support local.

I love steez and certates, but for the price the 2012 luvias is the best reel I have ever used. They are just brilliant and I would thoroughly recommend them. I would not go the TDR or the 2007 certate, although both may be fine, the rest of your suggestions are in a different league IMO

Will, you said used to use a 2010 Tate as a heavier reel, what did you replace it with and why?

Man 2013 Certates are $419 locally now, I reckon its a better option than the 2010 Tate. It has the Magsealed roller bearing which is handy when you head off shore.

I also had 3 x 2010 Certates and the only reason I sold them was to buy Exists. Only drama I had was the roller bearing going apart from that I absolutely loved them.

I've since bought my Dad 2 x 2013 Certates and he has had zero dramas with them! He has also chased everything from jungle perch to barra to mackerel with them and they are still going strong!

Steez is still an amazing reel and the new Luvias is nice too.

I would pick them from that list in this order:

2013 Certate (Offshore and Fluoro)
Steez (Fluoro)
2010 Certate (Offshore and Fluoro)
Luvias (Fluoro)
Certate Hyper Custom (Offshore)
TDR (Offshore)

Either way you choose to go you're going to end up with solid reels that will do the job!

New 2013 tates $410 on mo's now. I'd agree Luvias' from japan are easily the best money for value reel on the market but I love the new tates also for a 2010 tate I wouldn't be paying anything over $320

But if you wanna go more on an old steez they are a special reel and $500 for a brand new 2004 is a pretty good price very sort after reel nowadays.

Jase, I had three 10' tates for a while and the only reason I got rid of them is I found good priced old skool reels and in my opinion the certate where chunky, solid and to this day if I wanted a good 3000 reel it would be a hard decision between a exist and certate , only because I destroyed my exist while the certate got more thrashed and held up, exist handle started playing up, anti reverse went ect

A hyper custom is nice but there's others that do the job with a less price tag,

Decisions Decisions
