OSP Bent minnow retrieves?

Tried out the ever popular OSP bent minnow 76 today, was too late in the morning to be at its most effective I feel.
What do you find to be the best retrieve for this lure? I kind of just twitched it and let it pause for a second or two the twitched it for a metre or so? I have never used this kind of lure before?
Im not asking you for your secret retrieve just a point in the right direction
Thanks guys, Ash

Hey Ash, the OSP bent minnow is possibly the most funnest type of fishing you could ever do with your pants on
Super early morning dawn raids are my most preferred time for some bent minnow action on our southern blacks, but on the right day you can throw bents all day long
I cast my bents hard up into structure or hard up against the bank and slowly twitch them back. Real finesse type of fishing.

Have a look at this thread it may be off some help to you bud.

Next time you are free, throw me a PM and we can sought out a fish together and get stuck into some bent minnow eating brutes

Ive found you have a fish chasing it down I stop twitching and go to a slow roll for a solid hookup.

I just retrieve it like a walk the dog lure. The main thing i vary is the speed. It's a really, really good lure in the right areas. I mainly use mine on flats over weedbeds. Even caught my pb flatty on it not long ago.

As per sexton's comments that thread is great. It really does depend on what ya after though. That's the beauty of the bent. It works on soo many species under different conditions. I've 'teabagged' and dead sticked these for bass. Used a double pump n pause for Barra, fast isolating twitches and retrieve for yellafin bream, burns and dead pauses for giant herring. Mix it up mate, you'll be hooked as soon as you figure the patterns to create hook ups.

I have all my success on a really quick walk getting It splash and flick out the water then I give it a hard twitch down to get it to dive about a foot under and almost every time its a hook when the lure slowly starts floating to the surface, I have caught all different species on this technique I have landed 50cm bass on this retrieve Saratoga endless amounts of bream estuary cod. but I am in seq.

How could you teabag a bent ?
I've caught plenty of bream and ep on them , even had a mulloway slash at one , but all on a slow twitchy retrieve and plenty of pauses.
Reddies love em too...Saying that i really need to use them more as i think that i have only scratched the surface of what these great lures could achieve

Tea Bagging...

Haha, funny enough cast it into structure but have your line just placed over a high bit of structure between you and where you cast the lure... say a light branch on a overhang of vegetation (making sure you cast it such a fashion that should you hookup you can either quickly rip the line off the branch or that it simply rolls off). Gently rip the lure back towards you and stop at the point you have cast over. Slowly 'teabag' the bent making it look like a fish or creature struggling on the surface, this way you can constantly peak the lures head above the surface on the spot... Works great on bass. Mind you best from a yak too, so you can reposition to fight the fish and get the line free of the branch etc. Sounds a bit unorthodox but it works really well in certain circumstances (casting to edges for bass); here's a bass that was tea bagged earlier (actually last weekend 2/3):

I came across this video recently that displays a number of bent minnow techniques very well.

The versatility of the bent is impressive and it does look fun to use, however for such a simple design I think the price is unreasonable. I'm sure I will pick up a couple one day but it will be a tough game convincing myself to cast into risky areas. Not being able to fish with reckless abandon will be damaging to the fishing experience which is unfortunate and I see this lure being saved for the 'ultra open' flats only. The thought of losing one to a tailor is also a concern.

My preference for the bream in my local waters is to upgrade the hooks and rings to heavier items which gives the lure a slower float rate, then i fish it with a few big jerks to get it darting around under the surface of the water and a long pause to float back up. I'm not sure what species of bream you fish for, but on yellows I much prefer the 86mm aswell, easier to cast over distance and they have no issues in trying to eat it.

havent watched the video yet.. but do you guys tie your leader tight onto the lure, or do a loop knot for better action..
cheers

I use clips for everything, I'm sure they'd work fine with a bent too. They are advertised with them on in some instances.

I normally use a decoy clip but when I'm being lazy I have tied my leader tight to the bent and haven't noticed any changes in the action of the lure. I mainly use the clips to help change over lures quicker and easier.

I find the clips make a huge difference in action, they just don't have the same degree of sideways movement without clips

Boonard their only $20 US, I only use them in heavy timber and yes ocasionally a big EP floggs one but not so much bream As long as you can see it while retrieving then your in a good position not to lose them
