Shimano Septon Handle Grips

Has anyone noticed that the Shimano Septon grips can become sticky/tacky to touch. I have noticed it on Curado and Stradic.

Gulp juice will do it as will some lubricating oils- I don't use Gulp with anything with that type of grip

Funny you mention this. I have had none of mine do this, however, I recently visited shimano service to replace a handle with neoprene, and the service boys mentioned that they are starting to experience septon handles breaking down on older models when servicing.

They are not quite sure what is causing the damage, although suspect maybe sunscreen. Testing is being conducted, and the little I have read from similar concerns in the USA suggest that it may even be a particular type/brand of sunscreen or ingredient.

Mine is starting to break down.
And get tacky.
It's not sunscreen.
I use disposable rubber gloves to apply my sunscreen.
So i don't have it on my hands going into the lures.

Its happened to one of mine. It definitely was not caused by sunscreen.
I think getting a small amount of Inox spray residue on it over time caused it.
If you catch it soon enough, you can wash the grip with warm soapy water and it will help.

Use Lanox, not Inox near rubber unless its the bottle version. Inox specifically state not to use is near rubber due to solvent in spray version. I use Lanox for everything as its safe on all fubber and seals cork/eva grips nicely.

Most type of solvent will do it. All engine oil and stop leak products have solvent in them....why? To stop dried out/dirty rubber seals leaking by swelling them and cleaning making them tacky etc. Lanox and other Lanolin based will not do it. Must be from oiling the knob bearing or spraying/wiping over reel. But even sweat or oils from hand can do it ? Not sure.

Yeah Inox will do that.

My old FJ2500 used to cop a hammering with salt water each trip. I use a lot of Inox after washing it down with fresh water afterwards. The reel mechanically is faultless, but the Inox has gradually broke down the grip.

The same goes for the rubber gaskets on Hobie hatches and the ST/Turbo fins on mirage drives.

Believe it or not, some people's sweat actually weaken surface of the grip.

Bushmans spray on insect repellant / sunscreen mix did it to my reel handles and my kayak paddle grips almost instantly.

Tossed the can in the bin, scrubbed down my gear, will never let a tin of it darken my door step again!

Certain insect repellants will trash the coatings on optical surfaces too - lenses etc

Well it seems I am not the only one then, I don't really use insect repellant and I try not to get sunscreen on my hands so I think the grips breakdown regardless. Shimano will be hearing from me soon.

Its just the oil getting from within the handle assembly onto the handle...

My Saros's handle is getting slightly sticky now - all I do is wipe it with a rag & metho. Clears it up and good for another year or so.

Convert the handle to EVA or a home made cork job.

Good news for Curado handle, the Chronarch grips are listed as a spare part and the fit on, they are identical, so no need for a whole handle assembly. They are about $5 each.
