30hp 3 cylinder yamaha

I am looking at a new motor for my new rig a 399 proline. I will not be spending the coin on a 4 stroke as they are simply too pricey for my budget.

How do these engines compare to the other 2 strokes out on the market? There are some really good deals on at the moment and they are only around 300$ more then most of the other two stroke brands. I have never seen or played with the 3 cylinders so have no idea if they are any better then your suzukis, mercs etc etc.

From what I have seen on the interwebs is they are slightly better on fuel and not so rough compared to other 2 strokes.

The 30DMH on the back of my boat is the first Yamaha I have ever owned. Going from a 2 cylinder Johnson, I have found the Yam to be quieter, smoother, great on fuel, and dare I say it, with lots of grunt. Starting is a breeze even after nearly 12 years of service to both myself & its previous owner.

If your budget allows for it I would say go for it, I re powered my 370 edge tracker tournament from a 25 to the triple carby 30 and the difference was huge in performance but hardly noticeable on the fuel, 2 up with gear 25 took a bit to plane, 30hp and she jumps on to the plane. Add a bowmount electric and a days fishing is comparable to a 4 stroke IMO.

I upgraded my tinnie to the triple carb 30Hp yam before I got the bass boat.
Great motor. Very smooth for two stroke. Idle very slow also. Best option on the market I my mind in that bracket of two's.

I have run a 2006 model for the last 3-4 years and have never had an issue, crazy reliable.

Always starts 2nd or 3rd pull when dead cold and first pull for the rest of the day and uses bugger all fuel and oil.

Couldn't recommend it more.

Hi Nugget

I know this is an older post but I went from a CV25 yamaha to one of these and it made it a completely different and better boat. Now just need to sort out the prop.

jump in mine if you want, fishing all this week. ive got a 99 3cyl 30hp on a 4.1 ally craft rhino, electric, side console, full deck (front back and side) 2 batteries, etc. Gets up on the plane in about 2.5 - 3sec.

i was just reading yesterday a 30hp shoot-out. the 3cyl 30hp got to 40km in 8.8sec. All of the others tested (Suzuki, mercury, vortex, evinrude, tohatsu, parsun, Honda) got between 11.2 - 13.5sec.

Idle db was only beaten by the Evinrude E30 (69db to yamaha's 71db) and WOT db was beaten by Evinrude and Suzuki (96db, 97db and yamaha's 98db)

if your going to be carrying extra weight (decks, people, electrics, etc) the 3 cylinder is by far the way to go.
