"retired" reels

hey guys

need some advice...

got a couple of old reels which no longer are my go to reels and therefore need to keep them up in a box. was just wondering how they should be best kept and if they would still need to be service annually even unused since last service.

many thanks in advance.

cheers.

Why not just sell them? Its not like they will appreciate in value over time.

I still see new Shimano Aspires, Stradic Fi's and Stella FD selling new online all the time. That's a good few years in the box. Service them up and just put in the box.

If you want to keep them, store with the drag backed off and the anti reverse on. Put them in their bag or wrap in some old rag, and put them in their box. You might get nostalgic and want to fish them again, otherwise they will sit there for two years and you will forget about them!! Or get sick of shifting them around and sell them anyway.

Why with the anti-reverse on?

Buy a display case and have your own fishing display, would look cool and is a better use of them then just leaving them sitting in a cupboard hidden away.

backs off the rollers from the sleeve surrounding the pinion gear. it probably helps to stop the anti reverse from seizing

If it was me, I would just lubricate all the external moving parts and leave it like that. What reels do you have btw?

Yeah, I agree. Give em a lube and then don't worry about them. No use servicing an unused reel. Sparked my interest too, what reels are you talking about? Cheers

Manufacturer makes a new reel,it sits for 14 months in storage then goes to a wholesaler and can sit for 2 months then onto a retailer and can sit for 6 months.
You buy it as a back up reel and not use it for 2 years.
4 years has past sitting and when they come out the box they run like new.So you have nothing to worry about.

thanks guys. was just worry that the grease/oil might turn acidic and start corroding the reels.

The very well used SOL 2500 have been sitting in its box after service for about 3yrs now...

Won't need a service if it hasn't been used, just clean it, oil it and pack it safely away.

I also have 3 Fireblood that no longer fish anymore...keep them in box as a collection. Someone offer $900 for all three 1000, 2500, 4000. Got me thinking but in the end...I love them too much.

Storing them with the anti reverse on or off wouldn't matter at all. If the reels are in storage for more than a year and then in a container both on the boat and on a hot dock and then in a warehouse most reels should be stuff just in time for the consumer.

With what I said to Manno, storing reels in a case like I do (kinchrome 'pelican' style case') that's the only reason I turn the AR off due to the reels fitting beside one another easier and not forcing the rotors backward or against each other.

Servicing old reels is just as important in my eyes, oil and grease do 'go off' as such and dissipate to some degree so if you are going to give them a burn every now and again it wouldn't hurt to give them a quick touch up in between doing your other working reels.

If you want to get a little more anal about it all, humidity control their environment, limit their exposure to uv and aerosol sprays eg: perfumes and deodorants. Also looking into environmental corrosion control with such chemicals like sodium nitrite sprinkled through their environment...

So many things you could do to protect reels from ageing or being affected from environmental subjections, if its a good reel or new reel like my Abu 1500 & 2500 CIAR's just keep then away from moist storage, I do check them periodically & replace the silica packs I put inthe boxes they're stored in...
