Caldia 4 hrs of use is disappointing

Throwing lures which aren't heavy and retrieving and the reel is showing signs of wear for what it is.
Rotor and handle has too much play already, this is the same results on the cheaper reels.

What's this thing going to be like in 8 hours of use will be interesting to see.
At first it had such tight tolerances' on inspection but to loosen up this much in such a short time is too much, sure after a years use i'd understand and be ok with it but 4 hours is not really what i thought i was paying for.

Recommendations for this reel is zero, find something else for $260.This reels retail price should be $100.i have owned both cheap and high end reels over the years and this is not what $260 should be like.

I had similar concerns with a new sol (type 1) a few months ago where there was plenty of play in the spool before I even loaded it up for the first time.
It was mail order so I didnt get the opportunity to check it before buying it but still!!

All the best with it mate.

Which caldia? The one in the top picture or the new on in the bottom two pics?? If its the bottom one then that's weird because my 2500 has copped some abuse from big snapper and spangos through to meter plus mackerel as well as being soaked in salt water and is still the same as the day I bought it, brilliant reels for mine.

Mate I did the same a few months back, I bought one, spooled it up and was keen but the more I compared the feel and quality of it to similar priced shimanos I didn't keep it.

Very different to me as I've always used stradic sustain etc

I didn't take a picture only wanted to show the areas which have loosened up.
The reel is purchased from local tackle shop and is 4000 size.Current model as bottom picture.

It's just not good enough from the manufacture to charge top coin for a product to perform as it has.i have felt some of the diawa reels around the $150 mark and they felt sweet at around $300 its should perform like Pamela Anderson faultless.i can say some of the Shimano sustain I felt have not impressed me when I have compared it to the Stradic fg which is around $170 which has felt much better.

I have a 4000 caldia and have none of these issues it has worked flawlessly for close to 50 hours. cast and retrieve metals and poppers on my sea jigger for tailor. There is no extra play in the areas you have described in my reel... where was it purchased and how long ago... if they r unwilling to help call daiwa australia office and explain to them your problems. I have had services from them and they r always helpful. And they dont wont people spreading that they r representing a poor product.

Let us know how u go

I'm a one eyed Daiwa fan, but I too was utterly disappointed with the new Caldia. They feel cheap and un-refined, and very over priced.

On the other hand, the new Luvias is absolutely amazing. I have a mix of these, and new Exists, and I can honestly say that the Luvis are right up there.

My 2500 Caldia is fine. Tight and smooth. $180 well spent. For $260 (ish) I'd get a Luvias instead I reckon.

This is exactly why I strip and regrease brand new reels (prior to use if I can) - to ensure that good grease gets onto all the critical moving parts before any real wear and tear occures. Spooling up a reel fresh from its retail packaging would have to be one of the most severe actions one could subject a reel to prior to actually using it. Usually the reel will be somewhat oil free and the standard grease will be sparse at best. Thinking that this could be possibly the case for all the movement found after the initial break in - however why so much??

I find that this initial post about the caldia makes for good reading, can't believe how much 'loosening up' you've experienced in it! Would be nice to get into it and see how much wear occured and see how much metal filings would be found in the washout!!!

If you have rotor play it could be the central nut is not tightened enough.
With handle play I think a washer may need to be added to the gear set.

If that rotor nut 'god nut' got loos you would have a extremely sloppy rotor (with clattering noise rather than just bias). I fixed a ladies reel once when I was shore based fishing. If there is wobble and it's not clattering it's possible that the bearings are seating in either in their cups or the bearing itself loosening up big time, maybe a dodgy batch of bearings?

With the handle play its possibly that also (bearings seating), shimming the drive gear laterally would help but I did that it just pushes the drive gear towards the pinion which could promote gear wear if its too tight.

That's why I had to shim the bearings cups to remove the slop between te bearing and the body, I wonder if its that's what's happening to this caldia??

The rotor isn't too bad but has twice the amount of movement from starting out new.
The handle is most noticed.

For those who missed this question from a week ago....Re Freams
http://www.breammaster.com/forum/showthread.php?t=56002

I did say .... "checked out stradic . freams . caldia . sol . sustain . "
The freams had this much play out of the box so i knew it would get worse and passed on it thinking the caldia would be a smart choice.

Just being surprised at the end of the day a reel could loosen up so much which i never expected from a daiwa.
I'm going to keep on running it as tackle shop or daiwa could just say it's minor in there view fobbing off any responsability. So lets see how bad does it really get,i'm sure the meshing of the gears is now running out of wack.
