Servicing Daiwa Magsealed Reels?

Hello my fellow fishermen/women,

I have a few questions for those who have the experience:

1. Is it necessary to service a brand new, made in Japan reel? I would definitely do that for a reel made in Malaysian or Thailand;

2. How to service a Magsealed Daiwa reel, for example, a 2013 Certate? Will I loss the magnetic oil if I open up the reel?

3. Does anyone know how to get hold of the magnetic oil? Do not tell me I have to contact NASA

Thanks

i asked this question buying my reel and was told you don't open them. The only time it gets opened is by Daiwa service centre is when something ain't quite right in what the reels doing or feels like.
If it ain't broke don't fix it.Should give you many years service.

Hey Jonnie, I knew they would say that. For the manufacturers, servicing is another avenue of income and obviously they want to keep it to their own. But I feel powerless when I cannot open up my reels and fiddle around.

I've got a mag sealed Luvias 2004 and when I wind, something sounds loose. Is this a big problem? What would it be?
Cheers

Firstly it doesn't matter where, when or by who in Asia the reel was made or assembled. These days there is no difference between reels made in Japan or Thailand.

I haven't heard of anyone servicing their magseal reels themselves. I don't think pulling them apart is rockery surgery but I'm pretty sure the oil is very hard to get.

I think the issue is your 2013 Certate is a little noisy right? Mine is to but the reel is still super smooth. Do you actually notice the noise when you fish with? i don't.... Remember the newer magseal reels tend to take a bit to wear in. My new Exist was a little the same but after a few months of use it is quieter!

Save yourself the hassle and just send it to Daiwa
If reels are looked after well they shouldn't need servicing for a while after purchase
Depends how you treat em I guess

All I have herd is that the oil is propreitary of Daiwa and its not available to everyday punters for their own use - the only way to renew the 'oil' itself is to send it to Daiwa Aus and they will do it for you for a overinflated price

That Magseal element just comes out - see Alan Hawk's review and some of the schematics. If you dont disturb it I believe you shouldn't have a problem with it. The more you fiddle, the more you'll find things out and the better the reels will be looked after and last longer.

Magseal is a non-contact oil held in suspension with magnets between two surfaces - there shouldn't be any contact as its not a lubricating oil as such - only a water barrier concept. The gear noise is whats making the reel rough and giving you that noise your hearing or getting through the rod itself.

See the picture below of a brand new Stradic 5000 FJ - that stuff you see at the bottom is manufacturing debris - this shouldn't be in a reel and yes its in all reels as standard... You know why you take your car in for its first 1000km service don't you - I service my reels straight from the shop. There is no denying that the greases that they put into these reels as standard is sub standard and misses all the critical areas in its function. First thing I do to any reel of mine is to rid it of OEM grease and oil.

I have serviced a 2010 certate. The main difference I saw was the magoil in the magnetic assembly plate. The reel will function perfectly fine without the mag oil but it will be much more vulnerable to water intrusion. With magoil it could last years without getting water intrusion but without it will be just like the older daiwas.

My Caldia feels much smoother now (3 or 4 outings) than it was brand new.

im guessing pulling the side plate off and applying some good grease never hurt anything..

i wonder if anyone has used the magnatec oil from castrol instead and seen if it works lol

pretty sure you can buy the magseal oil from somewhere in singapore

while im at it would adding a few drops of oil on the rotor shaft be of any use??

You cant take the side plate off without removing the rotor, which is where the mag seal is, so you will hurt it.

Castrol magnatec is nothing like the product that is used, do some reading on ferrofluids.

Dont add oil to the oscillating shaft, in my experience that can cause issues.

Pretty much in general, if its mag sealed, the best you can do is add a drop of oil to the line roller (if that is not mag sealed).

that is not true, Daiwa did not invent this they just threw a buzz word at it. from what i can remember reading NASA was the first to use this stuff in zero gravity situations. im fairly certain someone obtained some oil, japan i think, but it certainly is available for purchase, just gotta hunt for it. oh and the bottle i remember seeing had no daiwa label on it...

the magoil is not in the rotor, it's in the assembly plate so taking off the rotor will not affect anything.

As for replacing the magoil, I've used some ferrofluid purchased online. It sticks to the assembly body like the OEM magoil. But if you take the assembly plate off carefully there should be magoil left on the magnetic ring to reseal the reel once you put it back together again.

I've got a few mils of ferrofluid is anyone is interested.
