Stradic 1000 Ci4 bail arm not closing?

Hi Guys,

Having a few maintenance issues with my stradic 1000 bail arm. The bail arm doesn't seem to be returning to the horizontal position ones I push it in the hopes of the spring return. Am I missing something incredibly simple here? I was having a few issues earlier in the week where it would go back to a semi horizontal state on occasion so I tried to investigate and I think I've managed to exacerbate the situation.

Will

There is a return spring (14807) inside with a rod passing through it as a guide, and there is another that literally moves up and down and this has a 90 degree bend at the bottom (12643), this comes in contact with the friction rung under the rotor and the bail return ramp. It could be the issue that the spring has dislodged either from its friction point or that of its seating position.

For the bail arm to return to its closed position the rod within the bail arm spring (14807) and the other rod with the 90 degree literally moves up when the bail arm returns.

Could be sand in there or the spring has dislodged or snapped, mind you these springs are now termed 'lifetime'...

Whatever you do do not action the bail arm with that cowling taken off as that spring has a propensity to dislodge and shoot out into your face (eye's).

Bail Arm

Check that the spring still has tension when the bail is nearly fully open then make sure no sand and grit is in the bail arm assembly.

Check the gap between the bail arm and the rotor

A large uneven gap means the radius of the bail arm needs to be sqeezed in slightly ..

No gap means the bail arm radius need to be opened up slightly ..

And by slightly i mean hardly any hand pressure when you do it ...

To close the gap hold the reel as in the pic and sqeeze thumb and other fingers towards each other gently ..

Bail Arm

To open the radius i hook a finger each side and use both thumbs to GENTLY push in towards the spool gently..

You can take the bail assembly off and do it but my way takes seconds...

Thanks for your help Slazmo and Bender (your username being rather fitting for your posts).

I have managed to solve the issue based off of Slazmo's Schematic. When I had opened up the side casing for the spring I hadn't realised I had dropped the small washer which is shown. Thus the spring wasn't loading up enough. The little washer was saved by falling onto a little z-man grub and stuck to the scent. Z-Man you've done it again.

Thanks again Slazmo & Bender
