Setup for Palm Cove

Hi heading up to Palm Cove with the family in the next few weeks. Staying within walking distance to the Jetty there, so am keen to do a bit of spinning and soft plastics off the jetty and the headland to the north.

Anyone fished there that can give me advice with location and gear needed?

Also I have a few barra sticks that are 2 piece, but am chasing a travel rod that has a case I can chuck in a suitcase as I cant be arsed doing the check in oversized baggage thing.

Any recommendations on the type of setup I will need and a decent travel rod that breaks down to suitcase size.

Was looking at the 3-7 4 piece but the tip seemed pretty light...

Any wisdom would be appreciated... Cheers Luke

You might be able to find something in the gen black travel range mate or a lox travel would be another good choice, what's your budget?

Yeah, happy to spend a bit for the right rod... Plan is it becomes a snapper on plastics rod after the trip... Matched with probably a 3000 size reel. round 300?

Second hand nitro would be my pick but in failing that I would go the lox mate, it's 7'6 And rated to 5 kg, the extra length would be good for longer casts from the jetty and shore to

If you have a car drive down south a little (5-10km) south to Yorkey's Knob. There is a nice area with a rock wall and outcrop and a beach on your right. You can get some good Salmon there and sea Barra. Also at Yorkey's Knob marina/boat club there are good fish to be had off the rock walls there too. On the inside of the wall there are prawns and whiting and the outside you can get lots of nice big fish. I had quite a few bust offs on 20lb line and leader on that wall, possibly big sea barra that I didn't have the gear for. Rods were bent in half and line peeling off.

I had about 6 weeks staying up that way and never wanted to leave. In the trinity inlet in Cairns I caught some awesome fish and even the little ones like jacks loved a fight. One late arvo I seen a bloke pull a big GT and an hour later hook up a massive cod on it.

I fished Palm Beach a few times and there were always lots fishing there but not a real lot going on. It depends on the sea's and the winds.

Anyway good luck.

EDIT: I would look at the Daiwa Generation Black travel rods. The deepstriker or black sniper or the bulldog would be good choices. I bought one of the travel rods when I was up the Goldy last week and it fished as well as my other 1pce gen black rod.

Beans, what sort of setup were you using mate? What sort of lures/plastics were doing the damage?

Cheers Luke
