Smile Bent minnow

Hey all. Got my first bent minnow today in prep for some top water action. Haven't given them a run purely because of the price tag. Just wondering what sort of retrieve to use and what is the action suppose to look like. Any input would be much appreciated.

Cheers. Chris.

Depends on the bite, but I have always had best success getting them to go sub surface. Quick 30-50cm jerks of the rod tip will get them darting under. The fish love to hit them as they slowly float back up or just as they reach the surface... a metre or so of walking it between rip's can help when they are a bit fussy... have a ball they are awesome

Mate you'll be surprised how soft your rod work has to be with the bents.
I find fast but soft little flicks good to get it to walk (it should plunge about 200mm under the surface) and a slightly bigger draw/flick with the rod shoots it off sideways where i let it hang paused. Then continue with the super slow soft walk, and flick it again out sideways and let let it hang.
If your too rough or aggressive on the bents they will banana/barrel roll and not present real well.
I have found the bents to work really well when they are cast a long way from the boat (sorta applies to most surface lures on bream)
I like to pitch them right up into the the shallows hard up on the bank so I don't spoke anything with the splash, and slowly walk back to the boat.
Mix it up and see how you go tho, but my biggest tip would be "slow and soft".
What colours/sizes did you get?

By far one of my favorite lures for bream in the warmer weater. Have a bit of a play around with it mate. I use a slow roll while twitching the rod fairly hard and fast to get the lure to dart all over the joint. I tend to walk the lure for about three meters after it lands, then chuck in another long pause and walk it for about 1.5 meters followed by a shorter pause. One very important thing I found is to throw in a few extra long between 20 second even up to a minute. If you see fish sitting behind the lure but still refusing to hit sometimes one short twich can entice a strike.

Bluegill is a favourite of mine!

I have found the best techniques with them is to do two quick rips down, and then allow it to slowly float back up and leave it there for about 10 seconds. When a fish swirls up behind it and misses it, a few slight twitches down will get it to dip under the surface, from my experience this is when the fish usually take it.

They work awesome!

Eastbrimin. This observation in regards to Sub Surface just confirms everything we have found also with the Bents. You are 110% Correct. Blacks are much more willing to hit them Sub Surface.

You would like the SWITCH66 its being designed to do exactly that sub surface action super super easy with a slow float back to the surface.

We are very pleased that our observations also have been confirmed by another Bent Minnow Lover.

Regards Nordy

Hey Nordy,

Just a quick question, to get the minnow to go underwater are you working the lure with your rode tip down or up? For example does it drive below the water line by it's self?

Cheers

Hurricane Bent is designed that if you twitch it hard it will break the surface, if you twitch it softer it will go sub surface easily , it's been named the Switch66 because of its erratic action will do a complete 180 side to side, also it will roll, all sub surface, looks like a very wounded baitfish etc. The rod tip is always down. You will find all bents are fished with the rod tip down. They are a sensational fun lure to use. Very visual. My favourite when there on the surface, ESP over structure. Enjoy

Not too sure about that one Nordy i fish out of a yak therefore rod tip down is not really an option. I hold the rod up if i am just walking them across the surface and have it parallel to the water when i want them to go sub-surface...
i find that it is more in the quick jerk of the tip that gets them going under...
