Shimano Owners - .07mm & .09mm Allen Key Alternative

Anyone that owns a Shimano Sustain or higher and has that annoying spool bearing support - there is that grub screw thats a .09mm Allen Key fitting. You cant service your reel without removing that bearing collet assembly.

As I was wanting to shim my Sustain as I have been doing with my other reels I found myself 'cocked' as I dont have a .09mm Allen - my mate does but I didnt want to go all the way out and get it for just this simple shimming service.

So I thought of precision screwdrivers - didnt work regardless of how small I went...

The thread end of a sewing needle I thought as I have some for de-circlipping bearing shields - one was too small and tried another slightly larger... Fit... Slight turn and the grub screw wound out smoothly.

pics below - hope it helps.

Yeh I know where to get them - the price is steep for one from a RC shop - my mate Pete promises me a few when he gets the next bearing shipment...

Till then this works - mind you the Sustain wont be opened much through the year.

P.s. you miss spelt smartass

you can get them through bearingstation on e - bay. .07 and .09. I use the precision screwdriver with no problems, maybe mine are so cheaply made they aren't even the perfect size they're meant to be or something... maybe rubbing the needle on a sharpening block a few times might make it fit a tad nicer, like you've said before cross threading that screw and theres probly zero chance of ever getting it out. Further more if anyone ever does cross thread it I guess you could put the reel on its side, dip the end of a needle in 30sec super glue and let that set on it; would be your only hope.

This morning I dropped in to aldis for some supply's and I thought id check out the middle tables for cheap bargains.
And there is was a mini tool kit with Allen keys from .7 all the way to 4.0.
Also comes with anti theft bits , screwdriver bits , little cutters a magnifier glass and a few other little bits and pieces.
The best thing. $9.95.

Yeh I am familiar with those key bits - my only concern is the depth of the working end as it has to pass over the bearing and be able to fit into that grub screw without too much side to side or upward bias (not wanting to strip that grub screw!).

I think I'll continue with the sewing needle trick at the moment until a .09mm Allen comes up - that grub screw comes out easily now since the locktite blue has been removed & it greased.

Yes it stays in once its been inserted as those plastic spool washers slide over it. But got to say that Aldi does sell some interesting stuff - their screwdrivers seem to be pretty good, happy with them so far.
