Trout close season

Thought it would be a pretty black and white answer.
Can you fish flies in trout streams in vic bar no fishing at all rivers in victoria during close season if you have no intention of actually keeping the trout.
I dont eat trout. Hate the taste actually. What i do need to do is keep up the work on my fly casting presentation and trout stalking skills. Of witch i have bugger all.
I want to go for a burn up to licola or dargo when i get home from work for a flick but wasnt sure weather close season meant no fishing or no taking.
Wouldnt mind a panning a few reddies while im there though.
Any help on the subject would be appreciated.

No fishing in any running water for trout at all during the closed season. Except for the open rivers like the merri.

Thats what i thought mate but theres a difference between no line or hook rivers
And the no taking or possesion rivers. Theres no documetation i can find any where that states i cant do it. I just cant keep them. With the exception of the no fishing at all sections. Im at sea at the moment so cant call the dpi back home for clarification.
If its not on its not on and im happy to abide buy the ruling.
Can i still spin for reddies then?

Rivers and Streams

Minimum legal size: no minimum
Bag/possession limit: 5 salmonids of which no more than 2 fish may exceed 35cm
Closed season: closed to the taking of salmonids during the salmonid closed season (see above).

Now what do you make of that. Closed to the taking of trout. I see it as you can still catch trout but all must be released.

They really should clarify the wording of that one.
Found a thread in another forum relating to C&R bass fishing in closed seasons.
Ten pages long and they were still no closer to an answer.
Lot of opinions got thrown about but nothing in cement.

The clarity is in the specific locations. Read the link there are maps.

Some areas are close to hook and line which means no fishing period, the others are simply NO TAKE which means if you accidentally hook a trout whilst chasing other species in there they must be released unharmed asap.

It's simple and clear to understand, read it.

Sweet so catch and release of trout in the rivers marked in orange is ok.
Thought id send a letter to the dpi and ask just in case.
I heard they can confiscate all you're gear if you're caught doing anything halph suss even if you thought you were in the right.
Its not something i want to deal with weather I'm right or wrong.
It might sound simple but its probably some small piece of nomenclature
That could get a bloke into a lot of trouble.

You are fine to fish the orange areas, if chasing other species.

If you are deemed to be chasing trout during the closed season then you will find yourself in trouble.

I'm sure you've heard of similar instances when people have been penalized for chasing cod during the closed season and they claim to be chasing redfin or yellowbelly.

Regardless of the i was chasing other species excuse why would you want to actively target a species during its spawn period?

Its just putting extra pressure on the species and can impact its breading potentially reducing numbers in the future.

Seems like common sense to me...

Agree with you it's a fairly narrow minded, selfish action to chase fish that are being protected during their breeding season.
Highly unethical and unsavory behaviour.

Bugger it leaving the rods at home.
Not worth bothering with.
Was looking forward to a feed of reddies with the little bloke though.
Wonder whats the point of the red and orange sections of river.
Makes you wonder how many people have been accused and prosecuted for fishing in the grey area while actually the perpetrator was innocent.
That would suck.
Anways thanks for the help.
