The new 2013 Stella

Incase anyone was curious, Alan Hawk has released his much anticipated review of the new Stella. His summary at the end was quite a surprise

Another great and honest reveiw by Alan. Read it this afternoon.
Very surprised. Why would you change the best heavy duty spin reel on the market and possibly even make it worse ?
I pretty much a daiwa fan boy but even id choose the Stella over the Saltiga

The changes might be looked less harshly on if they hadn't bumped up the price.

I reckon the old 08 models will sell like hot cakes now.

Had a laugh over his hair comments

Hard to say.

I think you have to weight up the pros and cons of each. The saltiga still suffers some flaws.

The stella still seems better but the brass gearing COULD POSSIBLY wear under long and heavy abuse. This is a bit unknown though due to it not being out that long.

If you read his other reveiws he rates the Catalina as a Saltiga minus a couple of bearings that arnt super important anyways. The Catalina also addresses a couple of the minor issues with the Saltiga.

If you have money to spare get the new Stella. If your budget consience grab a 08 Stella on special or a Catalina. Either way your going to own one of the best reels ever made.

I just tested the 'play' in the rotor and shaft of my 2500 fe.
Doesn't move any where near like that!!
That's enough for me ill cry myself to sleep tonight as I really wanted one maybe later in the year!
I think Alan just save me $1k haha.
Sad sad day....

I don't think reading my own obituary or that of someone I deeply love would make me as sad as I am right now after reading that review.

have to say thanks alan for the effort and information, but you didn't save me bulk coin, i'm getting a dogfight

really, REALLY disappointing to read. considering the gigantic price and omfg-it didn't even make his list.

def a worse review than the saltiga and catalina, at least those two made his list

I am literally shattered, expecially after offloading quite a few of the older stellas, both fe, fd and sw.

my only hope is that shimano recognize these brain farts, trim their pubes at home and sort this reel out before I get home at the end of the year.

ps, manno I need a hug lol
