Merc outboard issue
Just looking for ideas on my outboard on my new rig
I have a 1999 merc v6 135hp When I'm out on the water it spits water no problem except at idle it's spits when you first start it on plane at 3-5k revs strong flow I have a psi gauge and have searched it and its normal My issue is when I get home to flush it the water wont shoot out barely comes out unless I rev it to 2000k Rpms by then it's between hot and warm the water I know your not to rev them while on rabbit ears . . I had a new impeller installed and its prob only done 10-15 hrs since it was replaced Could it be I just have poor water pressure on my tap ? Would like some opinions Thanks Alex

I once picked up a grain of sand that sat in the water line, did the same thing. To fix it I used a piece of 40lb mono pushed through the line to dislodge the sand.

Check if there is another intake. On my tohatsu I have an intake under the cavitation plate that I need to cover or I burn out the impellor when flushing.

How long do you run it for and how long after you last shut the motor off does it get flushed (time between ramp and home). You may just have to let it heat up to open the thermostat up.

shouldn't be water pressure as when it idles you said it hardly comes out but when you rev it to 2000rpm it comes out i thought the more you rev it the more water it would need as it's spinning faster..
when it idles and hardly spits,, is the water coming back out at the rabbit ears..and if so have you tried holding pressure on the ears to get a better seal and maybe then the pressure will push it thru

Also try feeding a piece of 100lb leader up the tell tale, we also sucked up some sand and mud in shallow water in our boat and it barely pumped any water at all.

Mate, its a Merc, just unbolt it, drop it in a deep hole and buy something else....
Seriously tho, i had a similar problem with my Etec, i thought i'd done an impeller as it wouldnt pump water on the muffs, but i found if i held onto the muffs, pushing them tight for a better seal on the intakes it was fine. i just got some muffs which feed water to both sides of the muffs and they are better, but still i need to push them on to get a proper telltale. I do like saying muffs a lot... |

Don't think it's sand as its fine in the water
Prob 30-45 min so it would be cooled down Tried putting pressure on it as well When I rev it the water is quiet hot so I worry about leaving it on as your not supose to rev them on rabbit ears that's after I leave it on for a min or so at idle

The motor will cool down quite considerably in that amount of time, just allow it 5 mins to warm up and see how you go then. How long do you flush for anyway?

Mercs and rabbit ears don't really work to well together...My old motor, I had to use the drum to flush it as I had the same problem. Was a pain in the backside though...But I have since changed over to another brand of motor and its fine...Don't have that problem any more

Quote:
Brett, get a garden hose adapter fitting- it will screw right into where the water comes out. Then you can back flush the engine by clipping the hose on. No need to start the engine. Its what I do and have seen alot of others do the same. Havent had any dramas over the two etecs Ive owned by doing it this way. Alex- get the muffs that push water in both sides. If it still doesnt help your definitely up for another water pump. |
