Need heavier reel

Looking for a heavier reel for snapper, jew, jigging etc. I see the Okuma 6500 V-System for sale at $200. Any thoughts in these? Will they stand up to the rigors of this type of work?

Vs65sa 6.3-1 300m/8kg Spin

cheers,

Tony

That gear ratio is very high, I have a biomaster sw 4000xd jdm model and it's 6:1 ratio from memory, jigging reels I've seen are typically below 5:1 with the higher ratios typically used for casting stickbaits, poppers etc

Go a stradic fj 8000 or a saragosa mate, can't kill em!
Cheers matt

Had a mate use a v system jigging, first drop (near new reel) and the handle broke on the retrieve. They are a nice reel but not suited to jigging IMO. Saragosa would be my pick in that bracket too.

I would avoid the v system entirely. not a great build internally. they have an oval shaped oscillating gear for some reason. I like circular gears for max strength.
also a massive pain tearing down and reassembling oval gears as they have to be aligned meticulously to work properly.
a small/medium stradic/saragosa would also be my choice

found this also:

might help.
I have only serviced one v system, courtesy of a friend of double-n, and I should add, the paint work and entire exterior isn't very durable, even when washed and maintained.

I think the saragosa is being discontinued or at least a new model is coming so you should be able to get em at clearance price

Just like the Daiwa Saltist spins - high ratio is good for popping and lures but when it came down to jigging their drive gears sheared just behind the gear...

Hilarious on that kinda reel!

Would love a Saragosa at the moment but prices are too high still...
