Shimano Aero, what's the deal?

I was just looking at one of these today http://www.shimanofish.com.au/publis...aero_spfa.html thinking it would make a sweet reel to match to a gen black shore hunter for beach/break wall bashing as it only has 3 bearings (less to worry about with sand/salt intrusion) and is relatively cheap. I noticed that the spool/rotor is weird/connected and the lower black portion of the spool rotates with the rotor, is there some sort of purpose in this?

I think that's just a line guard to prevent line getting underneath the spool and wrapping around the spool shaft. Very common in long cast surf reels.

Shimano Aero4000

Just for your information, there is a European version of this reel, the Shimano 4000Feeder FA. The Australian version has 4.8: 1 retrieval whereas the European version has a faster retrieval with a 5.8:1 ratio. Depends what you want to use it for and whether you want to buy from overseas with probable lack of warranty.
Cheers,
Pheonix.

been around since the Biomaster came out. you can get the 2 models in Australia anyway, 4000SPFA 4000FFA. the FFA is $20 more though.

FFA you get a spare spool and line reducers (if don't want to fill will backing). great rock/surf reel, you get over a meter per turn of the handle.

awesome reel for sending metals out for tailor. by far one of the better priced reels by shimano, with X-Ship, new body design and takes plenty of parts from the Biomaster like drag clicker, handle. yet cheaper than the Stradic 4000.

I thought it looked weird at first too, but seeing it in the flesh it looks kinda cool, and felt pretty good for the price. The line lay does look pretty crap at 0:28 though.

Ha! on closer inspection there is actually no line out at 0:28, I think it's just the leader. Look at 0:33 it looks a lot better. It's probably power pro too which is crap and chunky.

Varispeed... that would be the reason for the line lay.
