30 hp evinrude E tec question
Hey guys just got my new boat and im super happy with it but a few of my friends have mentioned a prop change and a permitrim hydro foil could make a massive difference to overall speed. Currently it pushes my 4.1 cross x along at just under 50 km/h but from what I hear that could be increased massively by a prop change from the standard one to one with more pitch.
My question is, are they they really worth it looked at getting a solas prop and permitrim hydrofoil. Any help would be much appreciated

Hey Bud check out etecowners web site has a lot of info. I have a 75hp Etec and do know you have to tune your boat into RPM and not SOG(speed over ground GPS). You can buy the software cable quiet cheap to check your RPM stored on the EMM if you don't have a tach gauge. Before you start on props and foils check to make sure the Cav plate is above the "V" of your transom. I did this before propping and hitting the sweet spot on RPM. I was over propped and under on RPM which loads the motor too much.
Had a few motors before and I am in love with this clean burn two stroke and won't go back. Cheers |

Cheers mate thanks for the response have to do some more research on it not making any rushed decisions yet need to find the money for the changes anyways just throwing ideas around at this stage seeing if anyone has any experience with their own motors who were thinking about doing the same thing. Once again thanks for the response mate

Yep I did a lot of research before propping.
Just under 50km for a 4.1m boat should be well more than enough speed. Huey on etecowners site is a global Etec guru and based in Sydney. Been very helpful with me and his prices are very good as I am in WA and we get ripped dearly here. Cheers. |

Thanks mate will try and get into contact with him, from what everyone has said the motor can easily push the boat along quiet a bit quicker. That and the cross x country blokes all said that prop makes a big difference in speed on their boats so some research might be in order

you will lose some top end speed with a permatrim fitted, usually around 5%. I fitted 1 to my 455 topender because I fish shallow water sand flats & wanted the ability to pop on the plane at lower speeds. i left the ally prop on for the same reason - easy to rebalance an ally prop it i hit anything. my top speed is around 50km depending on the weight on board, i reckon thats comfortable, a few more km/h does not really save you much time.
IMHO look at your boat set up/weight distribution before outlaying coin on ss props to achieve speed. if you want to plane at lower speeds, then a permatrim or hydrofoils will make a difference. |

I agree with ratbags, in my experience having permatrims fitted has always resulted in a loss of top end speed. Also with my experience with crossxcountry boats i found that they don't seem to have a high top end speed , especially considering how light they are, i found that loading it up with weight didn't slow down the top end all that much (that may be because of the light hull) but i have ridden in all the models at their open days, also on personal test drives and have owned a 4.3 and i don't know if it is the hull design but none of the models feel quick to me especially considering the power to weight ratio of the boats i have ridden in, so definately research it well or you may fork out your hard earned for no or minimal improvement.

Ye thanks got into contact with a bloke whos done a lot of prop testing on his 4.1 hes had his up to 70km/h and generally tops out in the high 60s the speed can definitely increased.
Also found that currently I have a 11-12pitch prop on currently so its not exactly designed for speed on top of that it is quiet worn has a few dings here and there. if I went to a 15 or something similar I should see and increase from what ive been told. Hopefully be able to test the theory sometime soon Last edited by Loomis23; 15-04-2013 at 07:38 PM. |
